EastEnders fans are convinced they’ve sussed out Stevie Mitchell’s real game plan, after the Mitchell patriarch made a surprise reappearance in Walford on Monday night.
Steve, played by Guy Ritchie star Alan Ford, arrived on Albert Square in the soap’s latest episode, leaving his estranged son Billy Mitchell both stunned and angry over the unexpected visit. The character first appeared earlier this year at Aunt Sal’s funeral, and quickly highlighted the frosty relationship he had with his son, after having surrendered him into care as a child.
Phil Mitchell had previously warned him to stay away from his cousin Billy, but after running off, the character returned on Monday night, with Billy and Phil making it clear he wasn’t welcome in Tuesday night’s episode. Stevie tried to charm his way back in, but Phil saw right through him while a frustrated Billy stormed off.
Later, Honey comforted Billy and urged him to talk to his dad. Following her advice, Billy decided to have a heart-to-heart with Stevie about his childhood and his father’s selfish behaviour, reports the Mirror.
Before long, the conversation turned to Billy’s brother and Stevie’s other son, Charlie, who died in 1998, and Charlie’s son Jamie, who tragically passed away in 2002. Stevie, who has been absent from everyone’s lives, asked to get in touch with Jamie and was shocked to learn that he had actually died over 20 years ago.
Things quickly escalated when Stevie called Billy “son” as the latter vehemently cut ties with his dad. To add to the drama, Honey found Stevie in Albert Square, convincing him not to abandon his quest to build a relationship with Billy, which led Stevie to assert: “I never give up without a fight!”
As expected, social media was abuzz with fans speculating about Stevie’s real motives, with many curious as to why Stevie was so determined to reconnect with his son after decades apart. One user queried: “What’s Stevie really up to #EastEnders “, leading another account to retort, “I wonder how long it will take him to steal Honey’s ring..”
A third fan then added:” I reckon Stevie has cancer or another terminal illness or he’ll fake it to get some money out of Billy.”
A fourth viewer then commented: “I wonder if Stevie’s connected to Nadine, they both seem to have crawled out of the woodwork at the same time.”
Stevie isn’t the only relative to have caused chaos for the Mitchell family in recent weeks, as Jay Brown’s one-time girlfriend Nadine Keller recently returned to Walford to falsely claim that she was pregnant with his baby in a bid to extort money out of the grieving Londoner. Peddling a sob story to the future-dad, Jay vowed to stand by Nadine and her baby, but how long will it be before the truth comes out?
EastEnders continues Monday to Thursday at 7:30pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer
