‘Absolutely ridiculous’ Premier League star labelled as Newcastle United upgrade on Miguel Almiron

Newcastle United have been told that Brentford star Bryan Mbeumo would be an ‘absolutely brilliant’ summer signing.

The 24-year-old has played a major role in establishing Brentford as a Premier League side, scoring 21 goals in 90 appearances, creating a further 20 goals for his teammates. One of those teammates of course, is Ivan Toney who has been linked with an £80 million exit in the summer but for Chronicle Live’s Aaron Stokes, Mbeumo is the star attraction.

Speaking on The Everything is Black and White Podcast, Newcastle United Editor Stokes said: “He’s absolutely ridiculous. He would cost you a lot of money and close to what Toney would cost you but as right-winger – and we’re talking about someone who could potentially come in as an upgrade for Miggy [Almiron], Bryan Mbeumo would be my first choice.”

Indeed, there is sizeable chunk of the Toon fanbase who would like to Almiron sold this summer and fresh face come in to replace him and push Anthony Gordon and Harvey Barnes for starting places on the flanks. Mbeumo is just two goals short of Almiron’s all-time Premier League tally of 23, and has played 83 fewer games.

Podcast host Andrew Musgrove agreed with the pick of Mbeumo but did question whether the winger would be willing to be second or third choice. He said: “I love him. He would be an upgrade of Miguel Almiron but the only question would be is whether he would come in and play second fiddle to Gordon on the right because you’d have Barnes on the left which is all part of building your squad. But if you’re playing European football, playing three games a week then you can sell the dream to him and say to him ‘you’ll still get game time.’

“He’s brilliant. He’s got speed, he’s quick with the ball, positional awareness fantastic and eye for goal – I love watching him.”

Another potential arrival who could replace Almiron is Wolves’ winger Pedro Neto. The 24-year-old has been linked with a move to United as well as several other top Premier League sides.

It is believed it would take at least £40 million for Wolves to consider selling the Portuguese star, and given his goal tally – just 11 goals in 110 appearances – some might want to see more end product for such a hefty price. However, despite that, both Musgrove and Stokes believe Neto would be a top class signing.

“The right wing is going to be a priority in the summer,” Musgrove said. “I do think Miguel Almiron will go, I do see him being sold, and I so I do think they will want to bring someone deemed at least on the level of Anthony Gordon.

“Jacob Murphy is there but isn’t at the level of Gordon, good player and can still do a job but he isn’t at that level they’ll want to bring in someone who can really push Gordon.

“Pedro Neto is absolutely brilliant. He can alternate as well which is a good thing, he’s versatile. I don’t think he will be a Wolves next season – he’s fantastic and would be near the top of my list this summer.”

Stokes added: “It would be a real statement signing this summer, wouldn’t it? One negative is that he just can’t seem to shake of these hamstring injuries over the last couple of months. I know Wolves’ squad is so small and they haven’t really got too many players to rotate from so he picks up those little niggles but if he stays fit, it’s a no-brainer.”
