Alan Shearer sends ‘bonkers’ message to Newcastle United over star asset

Newcastle United would be ‘bonkers’ to sell Alexander Isak in this summer transfer’s market, according to the man who knows more than anyone what it takes to score Premier League goals for the Magpies.

No one has scored more in a United shirt than Alan Shearer, and he has sent a clear transfer message to the club over the future of current goal hero Isak. The Swede has bagged 23 goals for the club this season in all competitions, and 19 in the Premier League, as he looks to become the first player to hit 20 top-flight league goals in a season since the great man himself.

Shearer has been hugely impressed with Isak’s contribution to the side, but with the club potentially having to sell one of the big-name players in order to fund summer spending, there has been talk of interest from the likes of Arsenal, Barcelona and Liverpool. However, ‘Big Al’ says they club should do everything they can to keep him on Tyneside.

“He’s a very, very good player,” he told this week’s The Rest is Football podcast. “He’s a modern-day forward – you know the trend now of saying forward and not centre-forward, well he’s a brilliant example of that.

“He’s had one or two injuries this season, but while he’s been on the pitch he’s been absolutely magnificent. He’s brilliant at running in behind because he’s quick, and once he’s away you’re not catching him. He’s also very clever at coming short and dragging defenders in with him, therefore leaving space in behind. He’s a very clever, intelligent player and he’s got great ability.

“They’re sat on a great asset and it would be absolutely bonkers if Newcastle, for whatever reason, sold him in the summer. It’s really difficult to get goalscorers and he is one of the best, and they love him and rightly so. You know what it’s like up here in Newcastle, if you score goals then you’re going to be adored, and the fans adore him.”

Isak is said to be happy on Tyneside and could be set for an improved contract, with reports of a new deal in the pipeline. The 24-year-old’s current deal runs until 2028.
