Alison Steadman says Gavin and Stacey cast were ‘in bits’ as she chats about new episodes

Alison Steadman got seriously sentimental thinking back on the last day of shooting for the Gavin & Stacey finale, spilling to ITV’s Loose Women that everyone was “in bits” because it was just “very emotional”. The veteran British actress, known for her role as Pamela Shipman in the cherished BBC sitcom, described the bond with her co-stars: “It was wonderful, because we do feel like a big family.” She reminisced about the beginning of it all: “It was 17 years ago we filmed the first series.”

Alison shared how joyful the reunion was: “And it was so good to be back together. We were all laughing and chatting and hugging each other.” She confessed the wrap-up brought tears: “It was very emotional, and when we did the final day, and it was the wrap, we go around (as) individuals and just have to say a few words, nobody could speak.” Then she dropped a potential bombshell for fans hoping for more: “We were just in bits… and I think it will be the final one. It’s called the finale.”

Yet, looking back at her time on the show brings nothing but warmth: “But it’s been such a great experience.”

She reflected on how fortunate she felt joining the cast thanks to previous work connections: “I feel so lucky that I worked with Ruth (Jones) and James (Corden) on Fat Friends, years ago… and then they decided to write this series, and wrote that part of Pamela for me.”

Alison was over the moon about being cast: “And I was so thrilled at that, I thought that was so kind of them. And of course, what a great character to dive into and have a bit of fun with.”

This TV gem graced our screens from 2007 to 2010, making a comeback with a 2019 Christmas special that left everyone hanging after Nessa (Jones) got down on one knee for James’s character Neil “Smithy” Smith.

In the beloved sitcom, Mathew Horne and Joanna Page star as lovebirds Gavin and Stacey, with Alison playing Gavin’s mum Pam, Larry Lamb as his dad Mick, Melanie Walters as Stacey’s widowed mum Gwen, and Rob Brydon as her Uncle Bryn. The show’s co-creator, James Corden, 46, announced back in July that he and Ruth Jones had completed the script for the final episode, with filming wrapping up in October.

Fans can catch Gavin And Stacey: The Finale at 9pm on Christmas Day on BBC One and iPlayer, while the documentary Gavin And Stacey: A Fond Farewell will air at 7pm on New Year’s Day on BBC One and iPlayer. Alison recently appeared on Loose Women to chat about her new book, Out Of Character, which delves into her acting career.
