Big names in music and culture publicly mourn the death of R&B and soul singer-songwriter Angie Stone.
On Monday (March 4), Stone’s management posted an official statement on her Instagram page, which was soundtracked by her 2001 song “Brotha.”
“It is with heavy hearts that the children of the R&B singer Angie Stone along with her extended family want to thank you all for your love and well wishes during what is an extremely difficult time,” the caption began.

On the morning of Saturday, March 1, the vocalist died at 63 years old after being involved in a reported car crash. Stone, born Angela Laverne Brown, had concluded a performance in Montgomery, Alabama, shortly before the accident. According to Page Six, confirming Stone’s passing on Facebook was her daughter, Diamond Stone, 41, whom the singer shares with her ex-husband Rodney Stone. The singer also shares a son, Michael Archer, 27, with D’Angelo.

Kravitz, who Stone was a backing vocalist and saxophonist for throughout the 1990s, also posted a heartfelt message via Instagram on Monday. The carousel included his performances with Stone, who was also seen backstage with the musician’sa ex-wife Lisa Bonet, and their daughter Zoë Kravitz as an baby.
“She had a phrase that I loved, “Lenny, I am overly confident,”” Kravitz wrote in his caption. “She believed it and so did I. She went on to become Angie Stone and changed the face of music as a solo artist, becoming known as the queen of neo soul. She already had an illustrious past but this was now HER time.”

Stone began her career as a founding member of hip-hop trio The Sequence, who was signed to Sugarhill Records from 1979 to the early 1980s. In her solo career, Stone was a backing vocalist and songwriter, particularly for D’Angelo, before ten albums of her own. Among her most popular singles were “Brotha” and “Wish I Didn’t Miss You,” while she also sang the theme song of 2000s sitcom Girlfriends.
