Newcastle United look set to appeal Anthony Gordon’s red card against Brighton & Hove Albion. The Magpies are weighing up their options after the winger’s sending off on Sunday.
As things stand, Gordon is facing a three-game ban ahead of the Carabao Cup final, but Eddie Howe confirmed after the game that the forward would be getting support from the club. Gordon received a straight red card from referee Anthony Taylor after a 83rd-minute clash with Jan Paul Van Hecke.
Now, Chronicle Live has been told that sources close to the dressing room stated that it was “expected” that Newcastle would attempt to get the decision overturned. Gordon, of course, missed the 2023 Carabao Cup final due to being cup tied.
Howe said in the aftermath of the game: “I’m hugely disappointed for Anthony Gordon. He is a huge player and instrumental for us. We will review it, see what we make of it and make the next steps.”
BBC Newcastle pundit and former United star John Anderson also weighed in: “He is one of our big players, one of the influential players, one that can make things happen. Not having him there is going to be a big, big blow.I don’t see them winning it. It seemed pretty straightforward to me.”
Howe also added: “He plays hard – I want him to play hard, I want him to be competitive, but I don’t see an issue there at this moment.
“I think it would be very out of context with how he is generally, maybe a bit of frustration in the game that things weren’t going our way, but I’d say that’s not a common sight for me when Anthony plays.”
Match of the Day pundit Danny Murphy offered a neutral view and said: “It was a moment of madness because the whistle had already gone [for offside] which he obviously heard. The whistle’s gone and he just lashes out.”
Both the FA and Newcastle have been approached for further comment. Newcastle have two days from the incident to appeal the decision.
