Newcastle United are back on terrestrial television again this weekend for the first of two appearances over the course of the next fortnight.
ITV1 is broadcasting their FA Cup fifth round tie against Brighton & Hove Albion two weeks before also showing the League Cup final between Newcastle and Liverpool from Wembley Stadium. The first will see presenter Mark Pougatch joined by pundits Roy Keane and Ian Wright on Sunday afternoon.
The former is a one-time Sunderland manager, taking charge of five Tyne-Wear derbies, winning just one, while both played against Newcastle almost 40 times during their careers. Here is what Keane and Wright have previously said about the club…
Roy Keane
In the years after resigning as Sunderland manager and being sacked by Ipswich Town, Roy Keane released a second autobiography, The Second Half. Writing about Newcastle, Keane said:
“I always had a bit of hassle against Newcastle. I’d been sent off twice up there. I’d had my battles with [Alan] Shearer and Rob Lee.
“I always thought they were an arrogant bunch, for a club that had won f*** all.
“We always got decent results at St James’ Park; it wasn’t a bad place to play. But as for the Toon Army, the Geordies, the hostile reception – I never fell for all that cr**.”
Ian Wright
Speaking to Premier League Productions earlier this year, Ian Wright, in part, said: “I think the biggest problem now is clubs coming in and trying to poach players. We hear people talk about [Alexander] Isak every time talking about a striker, rightly so because of his form and how good he is…
“If Newcastle now can add to this and move certain players on. I don’t want to name names [squad players who aren’t first choice] because that’s disrespectful, but get in those players who are going to get them back into the Champions League; then you see where Newcastle go from there.
“Because I’m sure when Eddie Howe took this job, the very thing that was supposedly happening at Newcastle, they would have thought they’d have been a lot further on with different players [they’d have been able to sign]. So I think he is in a good place now, but he’s probably thinking, ‘Am I going to get players? Can I get players? Because now we can kick on.’
“They are in the right mode for it. You just want to see what happens next for them, quite exciting for Newcastle.”
