Asda announces return of ‘iconic’ money-saving scheme after axing popular reward

Asda has brought back its iconic Rollback scheme, dropping prices on more than 4,000 products in stores and online from today.

The supermarket has announced that the return of the scheme, accompanied by the comeback of its ‘that’s Asda Price’ slogan and the famous pocket tap as demonstrated by fitness influencer Joe Wicks in a new advert, will see an average discount of 25% on the included products.

The Rollback will include items across all sections of the supermarket, and will also be available in its Asda Express convenience stores. The supermarket has promised that many of the “family-favourite” products on Rollback will be 5% lower than competitor promotional prices, such as Tesco Clubcard and Sainsbury’s Nectar Card offers.

Asda has said it plans to add thousands more products to its Rollback scheme throughout the year, as part of a new strategy to move its entire range to a new low ‘Asda Price’. It comes after the retailer was the only major supermarket to see its sales fall in the run-up to Christmas last year.

Asda chairman Allan Leighton told Retail Gazette: “Asda was built upon helping hard-working families save money and we’re refocussing on that mission by bringing back Rollback and Asda Price.

“We’re lowering prices throughout our stores and online to make Asda the cheapest traditional supermarket and in the process returning to what makes Asda special – delivering unbeatable value to the customers and communities who count on us.”

The new campaign coincides with Asda discontinuing its Aldi and Lidl price match scheme just one year after its introduction. And it also comes the supermarket confirmed this week that is has axed Star Products from its rewards app, which allowed shoppers to get 10% cashback on the price of selected items and save straight into their Asda Cashpot.

When logging into their app this week, Asda shoppers were greeted with the following message: “From 30th January 2025 Star Products will no longer be part of Asda Rewards.

“Don’t worry though, you can continue to earn through our other offers,” the supermarket assured – but the change has nevertheless sparked anger and disappointment among shoppers, with some even going so far as to saying they will no longer shop at Asda.

In one Facebook group the news prompted one person to say they though there was “no incentive” to continue shopping at Asda after the news of the Star Products axe was shared, while someone else agreed: “Soon not be worth having anymore.”

A third person complained: “It’s near impossible get anything in your Cashpot now. I used to get a good amount but I’m lucky if get 50p or £1 these days.” and another said: “Such a shame as it really helped me out when times are tough.”
