BBC Breakfast’s Carol Kirkwood sparks concern as she returns to show

Fans expressed concern for beloved BBC Breakfast star Carol Kirkwood when she returned to screens this week, after taking some time off. Viewers feared Carol may be feeling under the weather as they took to social media to wish her well.

The star had been absent from the show last week, with fellow meteorologists Matt Taylor and Sarah Keith-Lucas stepping in while she was away.

After she returned on Monday April 22, viewers took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their delight, but some also expressed concern that the presenter sounded poorly.

One viewer tweeted: “Good morning. You sounded a little croaky this morning. Hope you OK.” Another added: “Someone please give Carol a throat sweet.”

Meanwhile, a third joked: “Carol sounds like she’s been on a mad one all weekend. This woman needs a lemsip.”

It comes as the BBC Breakfast star cadidly opened up about how she was left “devastated” by her split from her first husband Jimmy Kirkwood.

The weather presenter spoke to Loose Women star Kaye Adam on her podcast How to Be 60, as she was asked to share what had been her most difficult year in her life so far.

Carol married well-known Irish cricket player Jimmy when she was 28-years-old and starting her career at the BBC.

However, she has never revealed why the marriage didn’t work out. When asked by Kaye on the podcast about her divorce, Carol explained that she “didn’t expect” it to happen.

She revealed that it was “devastating” at the time but it eventually turned into “better things”. Carol said: “Probably the year I got divorced, I didn’t expect that to happen and it was shocking. It was pretty devastating at the time, but it led to better things after that.

“I think that was probably the hardest year, that or when my dad died. I was very close to my dad and he died when I was quite young and he was the apple of my eye so either of these two. For different reasons.”

The TV star is now happily moved on after getting for a second time to policeman Steve Randall. The pair were friends before falling in love, with Carol telling Closer that it “just kind of happened.”

Carol and Steve went on to get engaged in 2022 and had an intimate wedding last year in Buckinghamshire. The weather presenter gushed to viewers about her special day on her first day back to work after tying the knot, telling them she ‘wouldn’t change a thing about the day.’
