BBC make Alan Shearer decision after new Match of the Day host confirmed

Newcastle United hero Alan Shearer will remain a regular on our TV screens next season – after Match of the Day confirmed their new line-up for when Gary Lineker steps down as host.

Lineker and Shearer, who needs no introduction at St. James’ Park and beyond, have both been synonymous with the BBC’s flagship Saturday night highlights show for quite some time. However, a new era awaits.

Ex-England striker Lineker is stepping down as MOTD presenter at the end of this season and, following weeks of speculation, his replacement has now been named. His three replacements, in fact.

Kelly Cates, Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan will split the iconic BBC role moving forward for Match of the Day, Match of the Day 2 on Sundays and MOTD: Champions League on Wednesdays. It will be the first time that three people have shared the role, which Lineker has held since replacing Des Lynam in 1999.

Formal confirmation came from the BBC this morning. Alongside that social media post, and statement, it was also announced that Shearer and ex-Manchester City star Micah Richards would remain as regular pundits for the show.

Speaking about the confirmed new line-up, BBC Sport director Alex Kay-Jelski said: “I know viewers will love these three incredible broadcasters and journalists at the heart of our football coverage next season. They’re all brilliant at what they do and MOTD viewers can be sure they will be well looked after as the big football talking points are expertly analysed.

“Gary [Lineker] has done a phenomenal job at Match of the Day for the last 25 years – he’ll be missed greatly and we all still get to enjoy him on our screens across some of football’s greatest tournaments.

“Outside of Match of the Day, we’ve got some great new shows, voices and surprises lined up for the 2025/2026 season across audio, video and digital and we look forward to sharing them with you all later in the year.

“It’s a truly exciting time for BBC Sport’s football coverage.”
