Beyond Paradise star reveals surprise job away from BBC drama

When she isn’t filming the hit BBC show Beyond Paradise in south-east Cornwall, Sussex-born actress Barbara Flynn is working on her sideline business that actually produces some extra props for the series. The Open All Hours star, who portrays Anne Lloyd in the spin-off of Death in Paradise, runs her own jewellery business, designing and crafting the pieces herself, she revealed to Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary on This Morning on Monday, 22 April.

Appearing alongside co-star Sally Bretton, who plays Anne’s daughter Martha Lloyd, Barbara revealed some of her pieces even feature as part of her character’s wardrobe.

“That started as a hobby and then turned into a business,” she shared. “And the first designer was very sweet and said, ‘Come on, Barbara, let’s use it’. And so yeah, I’ve been very happy to do it.”

Barbara, who first found fame as Freda Ashton in the ITV drama show A Family at War in the early 1970s, joined the cast of the Kris Marshall spin-off last year, but previously revealed she only recently added the jewellery string to her bow.

Speaking to The Sunday Express in 2013 about her passion for crafting, she revealed: “My father was a pathologist, who in his retirement did some silver workshops at West Dean College.

“He would make me various things, like a flat pendant with my initials, but it was not until 2000 that I really took an interest in making jewellery.”

Last week viewers saw Barbara’s character Anne fo on a date with Richard Baxter, played by former Doctor Who actor Peter Davison. The pair have actually worked together before, appearing as Dr Rose Marie and Dr Stephen Daker in the ITV black comedy A Very Peculiar Practice, which was set in a health centre at the University and ran for two series on BBC2 in the mid 1980s.

Speaking to Dermot and Alison on This Morning about what might be in store for the pair, she said: “She starts dating, which is a completely foreign world for her, and she’s completely lost.

“And if it weren’t for a great deal of help with the pushing and the swiping and whatever you have to do with Melina. Melina is a gorgeous girl who plays Zoe, and she comes in and she instructs Anne in the language.

“And there’s someone at the farm shop who is quite a goer so she’s instructing her as well. So she has a lot of information coming in, and she makes two connections. And she does eventually hook up on the second date with Richard.”
