Beyond Paradise star Kris Marshall, best known for his role as DI Humphrey Goodman, opened up about a particularly harrowing experience during filming in the Congo. The actor shared with the Irish Mirror the terrifying moment when he narrowly escaped being kidnapped by armed militants.
“I got a parasite and had worms living in me, and every Sunday the army would come and kidnap someone,” Kris recounted. “They’d turn up with grenades and guns, and just put you in the back of a car and go off until someone paid them.”
He added: “They got the make-up artist, and the producer four times. They came for me once but I’d gone swimming in the river.”
Despite the ordeal, Kris has returned to the screen, reprising his role in the second series of Beyond Paradise. Having portrayed the DI from 2014 to 2017 and reprising the role for the UK-set series, the popular show continues to follow Humphrey’s adventures, including his romantic journey with Martha Lloyd, played by Sally Bretton, and their aspirations to expand their family.
In discussing the new season on The One Show, Marshall teased, “We’re basically following Humphrey and his girlfriend Martha’s journey as they move in with the mother-in-law down in the South West.”
Ahead of the new series, Kris explained why he thinks the show is so successful. “I think it has an amazing foundation as it is part of the Death in Paradise universe, a franchise with a very strong following that is loved by audiences all over the world,” Kris shared.
“I’m extremely lucky that Humphrey was one of the show’s most popular characters. We had already had a head start from the fans, but I also hope we’ve brought on board our own fans.”
“I hope people who haven’t watched Death in Paradise enjoy tuning in because Beyond Paradise is a completely unique and original show. It shares the same DNA, but it has its own identity.”
He added in an interview with Radio Times magazine: “It’s a show that harks back to a world that we still wish Britain was, a place where the world doesn’t take itself quite so seriously.
“The world has got too binary. It’s less nuanced. The world today takes itself so f***ing seriously.”
Kris also shared the challenges of creating a show like Death in Paradise or its spin-off Beyond Paradise.
Kris commented: “To make a show like ‘Death in Paradise’…that bonds all family members in the room, is incredibly hard to do. And to have people scorn it… I’m fine with it now but it bothered me a bit in the past. These shows are hard to make and they bring people together – that’s got to be lauded a little bit, right?”
