These 10 images show friends enjoying a night out in Newcastle in May-June 16 years ago
It seems that spring 16 years ago was proving a lot better weather-wise than it is now, if our latest pick of nostalgic images are anything to go by.
Around this same time of year in 2008, our Chronicle photographers took images of groups out and about around the Bigg Market
and this selection of scenes from the archives suggest revellers were enjoying much warmer evenings than we are at the moment. Our Friday night Bigg Night Out series ran from 1992 until 2012 and these 10 photographs were taken during May of 2008, with a couple included from June too.
Back then they could well have been listening to 4 Minutes, by Madonna featuring Justin Timberlake and Timbaland, in the city bars while another big hit that May was Rihanna’s Take A Bow. Remember The Ting Tings’ That’s Not My Name too?
And 2008 was the year that Danny Boyle made his Oscar-winning film Slumdog Millionaire – which also bagged him the Academy Award for Best Director. Fast-forward to this May and Boyle will be in the North East to shoot his latest movie 28 Years Later – read more about that here.
Also in 2008, Boris Johnson defeated Ken Livingstone to become London Mayor and in America, Barack Obama became the country’s first African-American president.
