Blue’s Gateshead gig ‘gate-crashed’ by TV star as crowd get Channel 4 stardom

There was a surprise guest at Blue’s Gateshead gig on Friday night, as footage from their packed out show at The Glasshouse ended up being broadcast live to the nation.

No fragrant Tyneside, having played the likes of the arena, the Academy and numerous outdoor events, Blue were greeted by a large and very enthusiastic audience as they took to the stage on their Greatest Hits theatre tour.

And, just as The Glasshouse was probably a very different type of venue to the one Lee, Simon, Duncan and Anthony are used to, The Glasshouse (formerly the Sage) has probably never witnessed atmosphere quite like the one for Blue.

Inside a venue that houses everything from orchestras to folk to music legends to big screen movies, Friday night’s punters were up out of their seats from the get go as phones and glasses of wine were held aloft to welcome Blue’s first number, their anthemic debut All Rise.

From then on in it was screams and arm sways galore, as the lads proved they definitely still have it, with some well executed choreo and undeniably good vocals, particularly from Lee and Simon.

The likes of U Make Me Wanna, Too Close and Fly By still sound as fresh as they did two decades ago, proving that when it comes to effortlessly cool pop, nobody still does it quite like Blue.

Just how well the four piece’s singing has stood the test of time was shown off to great effect in a quick acapella burst of Boyz II Men classic End of the Road and again in the soaring Breathe Easy.

While it was no shock that Blue’s setlist also included the likes of Sorry Seems To Be The Hardest Word, One Love and If You Come Back there was a surprise guest on stage in the shape of Tom Read Wilson.

It was revealed in the hours leading up to the gig that it would be featured on the latest edition of Joe Lycett’s Late Night Lycett and, having grabbed a second with the group between songs, Celebs Go Dating star Tom then stormed the show to join Blue right near the end of the show, as scenes aired live on Channel 4, before he then pirouetted amongst the lads as the crowd gave him a rapturous reception.

This was a night of top tier pop music and the best kind of nostalgia, with the whole country also getting to see just how wild crowds can be in the North East.
