Boyzone in Newcastle over the years in 29 photos as new documentary hits TV screens

In the same week that the group are back in the spotlight in a big way, thanks to their new documentary No Matter What, we are looking back the times Boyzone have wowed fans in the North East over the last 30 years.

It was back in late 1994 that the Irish boyband first arrived in the UK charts, with their cover of The Osmonds’ Love Me For A Reason very nearly getting the Christmas top spot as it peaked at number 2 in the top 40. Other early Boyzone hits included Key To My Life and So Good, before Ronan, Stephen, Keith, Shane and Mikey. landed their first ever number 1 in the autumn of ’96 with Words.

Other number 1 hits from the Boyzone back catalogue include A Different Beat, All That I Need and When The Going Gets Tough and every time the group played in the region, you could guarantee they’d draw a large and very loud crowd..

They were regulars at the Utilita Arena, back in its days as the Telewest and Metro Radio Arena, with early North East appearances coming as part of the Smash Hits tour, before they quickly packed out the arena and nearby City Hall with their own headline dates.

After a seven year hiatus, Boyzone reunited in 2007 and toured the UK and Ireland the following year, before the tragic death of Stephen in Spain.

Stephen’s passing hit the band hard, but they continued as a four piece to honour him, with more Newcastle arena shows in 2011 and 2013, before a big outdoor gig in Chester-le-Street in 2014. The last time Boyzone performed on Tyneside was for their Thank You and Goodnight farewell tour in 2019.
