Heartstopper has become one of Netflix’s biggest smash hits, with the third series of the coming of age comedy drama arriving on the streaming service later this year.
Alongside the regular cast, the new series will feature a cameo appearance from Jonathan Bailey, otherwise known as oldest brother Anthony Bridgerton in the hugely successful period drama. The 35 year old actor will be joined by two more new cast members – Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One star Hayley Atwell and The Thief, His Wife and the Canoe’s Eddie Marsan.
Heartstopper, based on Alice Oseman’s graphic novel, is the story of Charlie Spring – played by Joe Locke – a gay schoolboy who falls in love with his classmate Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).
Season two ended with the couple having a heart to heart about their feelings, but Nick stopped short before saying he loved Charlie, and the last scene featured Charlie writing ‘I love you’ in a text – but the episode ended before viewers could see if he hit the ‘send’ button.
The third season will follow on from that cliffhanger, and promises more romance and drama for the pair. Alice Oseman has hinted what else is in store for the couple – including the arrival of Jonathan Bailey’s character, Jack, who may caused problems in the relationship.
“I am incredibly excited to be welcoming three new cast members to the Heartstopper family,” she said.
“Hayley Atwell joins the Nelson family as Nick’s aunt Diane, who takes Nick on a summer holiday to Menorca and has some tough advice to impart about his relationship.
Eddie Marsan will be portraying a beloved character from the graphic novels: Geoff, Charlie’s wide and straight-talking therapist. And lastly, Jonathan Bailey will be making a cameo appearance as Jack Maddox, an Instagram-famous classicist and celebrity crush of Charlie.”
“It was an absolute joy to see Hayley, Eddie and Jonathan’s talent alongside our existing cast, and I can’t wait for the Heartstopper fans to meet these new characters.”
As well as appearing in the new series of Heartstopper, Jonathan Bailey is returning to Bridgerton for a third season as the Viscount, alongside Simone Ashley as his wife Kate, Viscountess Bridgerton, while much of the drama will focus on Anthony’s younger brother Colin (Luke Newton) and his relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
The new series of Bridgerton begins on Netflix on 16 May, while season three of Heartstopper starts in October.
