Britain’s Got Talent received several Ofcom complaints following a shock audition. The hit ITV show returned to TV screens with a new series in April, as Simon Cowell and his fellow judges search for the most talented emerging stars across the UK.
In an episode which aired on Saturday, 20 April, a number of auditions were shown, with the judges – Simon, Amanda Holden, Bruno Tonioli and Alesha Dixon – deciding who to send through to the live shows. However, one audition in particular had everyone talking, and not necessarily for great reasons.
Kimberly Winter, from the US, showcased her burping skills in a bizarre performance. She burped her way through ABBA’s The Winner Takes It All.
The unique performance saw two judges leave the panel, and Simon speechless. He said afterwards: “We weren’t expecting that, did you really fly in from America to burp at me? Really? It was so stupid, it was brilliant, really, that’s a compliment.”
Alesha and Bruno both pressed their red buzzers, but Amanda got involved and even burped her reply to Kimberly. Alesha, clearly horrified by what was going on, shouted: “I’m out of here, I’m out of here!” as Bruno added: “I’m bitterly disappointed, no, no, no!”
Bruno later had a change of heart and gave Kimberly a yes, with Amanda and Simon both also giving her a yes. However, Alesha firmly gave her a no as she disagreed with her fellow judges.
The episode received 54 Ofcom complaints in relation to Kimberley’s performance and viewers took to social media to share their thoughts on the act.
One wrote: “Please tell me why someone was burping on stage?” whilst a second added: “Burping is funny at first. But soon gets boring. #BGT.” A third wrote: “#BGT #BritiansGotTalent burping girl seriously????” while another added: “I’m sorry but how was that burping woman entertaining??…#BGT.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Sydnie Christmas was awarded the Golden Buzzer. The singer, 28, was understandably delighted by the outcome of her audition, but viewers at home were quick to criticise the decision to give her the Golden Buzzer.
Having searched through the singer’s social media, they found she’d previously appeared in Starlight Express – prompting some to claim she’d not been honest about her showbiz experience. However, Sydnie appeared on Lorraine on Monday, 22 April to discuss the backlash, and denied having ever had appeared on the West End, admitting it is her dream to do so.
