Brits in Spain face ‘chaotic’ scenes at Tenerife airport with urgent warning to UK tourists

UK holidaymakers are currently experiencing “chaotic” scenes at a Tenerife airport, leading to a surge of complaints from frustrated travellers. British tourists have flooded social media to express their dismay over the extensive queues at the popular Canary island destination, causing significant travel disruption.

Travellers have been quick to share their experiences on TikTok, with one irate passenger commenting: “Just came back today and half the plane was empty due to people being stuck in the queue. Absolute joke.”

Another tourist, concerned about potentially missing their flight, said: “We were fortunate enough last Friday to get through just before our plane left. What happens if you don’t get through on time? How do you arrange another flight and do you have to pay? ” Further grievances were aired by another traveller who mentioned an hour-and-a-half wait, while another had a stroke of luck, remarking: “This must depend on the time of your flight. I flew home yesterday and we were the only people there. Maybe 40 minutes or so before our flight boarded.”

Yet, not all passengers are feeling the pressure, as one frequent flyer pointed out: “I fly to the UK and back once a month. This is not the norm – far from it.”

The current uproar echoes previous alerts from November last year, when tourists were warned about persistent delays and “constant chaos”, partly attributed to Brexit complications, much to the annoyance of Tenerife’s tourism officials, reports the Mirror.

Urgent action is needed to address the one-hour queues at Tenerife South Airport, which are affecting hundreds of thousands of travellers, according to industry experts. Jorge Marichal, the boss of the Spanish Confederation of Hotels and Tourist Accommodations, criticised the airport for its increasing inconvenience, warning that it’s giving holidaymakers a poor first impression of the island.

Marichal stated: “This lousy image as the main gateway, both for visitors and for our own residents. We deserve a 21st-century facility.”

He blamed years of state budget “neglect”. Previously, we reported on a Brit who swapped the UK for sunny Tenerife, cautioning fellow tourists heading to the destination this winter.

The Canary Island, a popular choice for those seeking winter sun, may be a slice of paradise, but visitors are being advised to stay alert. TikTok user @theknightstrider1, who has lived in Tenerife for over a decade, warns of a specific issue that arises every winter season – pickpocketing.

Unlike mainland Spain, which slows down in winter, Tenerife’s tourist trade thrives, attracting criminal gangs who “fly in” solely to steal from holidaymakers, treating it like a “full-time job”.

In the video, he explained: “They are very good at it, and they will do pickpocketing. They will steal from cars if you leave stuff inside them, so please do be very careful with your wallets, and stuff like that.”
