Newcastle United skipper Bruno Guimaraes is understood to be back on Arsenal’s radar again – but suggestions that he has a release clause have been rubbished.
Although, the Magpies star has already pledged his allegiance to the black and white cause by insisting he is only focused on winning silverware at St James’ Park. Bruno will be the man who goes up to lift the Carabao Cup should Newcastle pull off a remarkable victory over Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday.
However, the arrival of Andrea Berta at Arsenal as new transfer chief has sparked talk on the circuit that the Gunners will be back in for the Brazil international this summer. A suggestion that Bruno has a £60million release clause if Newcastle don’t qualify for the Champions League in 2025/26 has emerged in the Spanish media but Chronicle Live can confirm this is not true, according to our sources.
We understand that Bruno has no release clauses in his contract and Arsenal would have to pay the full amount of his valuation if they were interested.
The link between Berta and the Bruno camp comes from his Lyon days when Atletico Madrid – Berta’s old club – looked closely at Guimaraes. But in 2022, Newcastle, flush with Saudi money after the takeover, gazumped Atleti and Juventus in the January window to seal the deal for the South American.
Bruno has made it clear he is happy on Tyneside and lifting a trophy and or qualifying for the Champions League would put any talk of an exit to bed this season. When asked what his aims for a successful 2025 were, Guimaraes told the United magazine: “Of course, to get back to European football, but the best one for me is to lift a trophy for the club.
“It’s something that I really want to do – like, really, really, want with all my power. I really want to do something for the fans. I think we deserve it. We were too close once, but I think if we go again, we have to handle this with all the strength we have.”
With Thomas Partey and Jorginho approaching the end of their contracts Arsenal are in the hunt for a midfielder.
