Call The Midwife is back on BBC One this Christmas Day, and Nancy Corrigan, portrayed by Megan Cusack, has romance on the horizon with salesman Roger Nobel (Conor O’Donnell). But it’s not all straight-forward for single-mum Nancy, as the pair try to figure out their family dynamic.
Here’s everything you need to know about the actress and her famous acting family. Born in Cork in May 1996, 28 year old Megan made her professional theatre debut in 2019. In September 2021, she was nominated for Favourite Newcomer at the TV Times Awards 2021 for her role as Nancy. Winning over many Call The Midwife fans, she also ranked seventh in the top 10 Period Drama Actresses of 2021.
Megan’s father, Pádraig Cusack, is a theatre producer, and she expressed her desire to be an actress at just nine years old. Megan is the granddaughter of actors Cyril and Maureen Cusack, reports the Express.
Cyril, born in South Africa and raised in Ireland, had his first stage performance at seven and later toured with his own theatre company. Known for roles in The Golden Bowl, Jackanory, Strumpet City and Clochemerle, he passed away in October 1993, aged 82. Maureen Cusack, born in 1920 in Ireland, was known for her roles in Odd Man Out, The Rising of the Moon and Von Richthofen and Brown.
The aspiring star Megan comes from a family steeped in theatrical talent, with several renowned thespians as her aunties. Among them is Sinéad, applauded for her performances in V for Vendetta, Eastern Promises, and Stealing Beauty, who is also wed to the famous actor Jeremy Irons, with whom she shares three children.
Megan’s other auntie, Sorcha, has captivated audiences in shows like Father Brown, Jane Eyre, and Snatch, and enjoys her off-stage life with hubby Nigel Cooke and their two kids. Another of her auntie’s, Niamh’s, portfolio shines with works including Hereafter, Matterhorn, and Testament of Youth, and alongside her partner Finbar Lynch, they raise one child. Then there’s Catherine, with notable appearances in Finding Neverland and Doctor Who, married to Alex Palmer.
Adding to her distinguished family tree are Megan’s celebrity cousins, Max Irons, Sinéad’s son, who has made a name for himself with Condor, The White Queen, and The Runaway. And Calam Lynch, son of Niamh and Finbar, who dazzled in Netflix’s hit series Bridgerton season two as Theo Sharpe. More recently he starred in Sky Atlantic thriller Sweetpea, and ITV’s Archie.
Opening up about her journey on Call the Midwife as Nancy and how her celebrated family guided her, Megan shared with Whattowatch.com: “My family have been vital at times. They’ve all said it’s a tough industry and a tough career, so you’ve got to really want it and, in regards to performing, they’ve always told me to just try and enjoy it because, the more you’re having fun, the more other people will enjoy what you’re doing.
“My grandma is a big fan of Call the Midwife, so she’s delighted I’m in it. She was a midwife herself, so she’s given me tips.”
