Cam’ron and Mase Think Jim Jones’ ‘Bad Energy’ Influenced Gervonta Davis Draw

On the latest episode of It Is What It Is, Cam’ron and Mase reacted to the draw between Gervonta Davis and Lamont Roach Jr., and blamed Gervonta’s walkout with Jim Jones and Juelz Santana for the lack of a victory.

Prior to the fight, Gervonta Davis walked out to the Diplomats track “Crunk Muzik,” with Jim Jones and Juelz Santana performing it live. Without directly naming them—Cam suggested Davis’ choice of walkout music gave off “bad energy” that contributed to the disappointing result of the match. Mase was asked by It Is What It Is moderator Treasure Wilson for his thoughts on the fight, but Cam interrupted to ask Mase if he could say something first.

“I just want to say something, to your credit,” he said to Mase, who was seated with a large bucket of popcorn. “A lot of times I’ll be like, ‘This n***a Mase, he be bugging.’ I don’t say it out loud, because your opinion’s your opinion. Mase always says, ‘Yo, don’t bring this n***a out with you, ’cause they’re not going to win if you bring this n***a out with you.’ Talking about football games, basketball games. And I be sitting here, like, ‘I don’t really know.’ But then I got it, when the fight went on. When you got that type of energy and you breathing that energy when everybody’s sad and mad and depressed, [trying to] look happy but they really not happy. It gets into you.”

Cam added that after the fight, he finally understood what Mase was on about. “The people you with, could possibly fuck your energy up for some shit that you supposed to do!” he said. “You can’t come out with that energy, man, it’s bad energy, man. Nobody’s happy over there. … Tank, get outta there.” Mase laughed and said he made a similar comment about the Philadelphia Eagles: “If Meek Mill walked them out, they’re not going to win a championship.”

Former NBA player Nick Young echoed their sentiment in a post shared on Instagram. “Tank fight was a draw soon as I seen Juelz,” he joked.

Elsewhere in the episode, the pair offered their honest thoughts on the results of the match.

“I think [Gervonta] lost the fight if we’re being really honest,” Mase said around the 7:30 mark of the episode. “Tank, you lose that fight. I mean, the only reason they gave you the fight was because you would make more money as a champion. But it’s no way it’s a draw, and they didn’t call it a knockdown! If they called it a knockdown you lost that unanimously, so I’m going to go on a record before everybody else tells you 100 percent you lost. Without blinking, hand up to God, strike me right here, you lost that fight. And I think everybody believes that.”

Cam agreed with Mase and said that the fight indicates that Shakur Stevenson, who has repeatedly challenged Gervonta Davis, could be the better fighter. “I think he lost the fight,” he said. “That referee has a lot of experience, for you not to call that knee a knockdown is crazy, bro.” Cam was referring to Gervonta taking a knee during the 9th round of the fight, which he later said was because he got grease from his hair in his eye.

“For you to take a knee and the referee to not call it, that’s crazy,” Cam continued. “He said he had grease in his eye. People fight with blood in their eyes, all types of stuff from headbutts, etc. … This is totally the referee’s fault because you can’t blame the judges. The reason you can’t blame the judges is because if the referee didn’t count it as a knockdown, you can’t score it as a knockdown. So that puts the judges in a compromising position for that particular round.”
