Changes to North East bin collections at Christmas and New Year – check what your council is doing

With all the Christmas festivities taking place in December, our bins can become full pretty quickly.

And it pays to know exactly when they will be collected over the holidays. This year, both Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall on week days – a Wednesday.

Therefore, many households may find their refuse collections are affected and your usual bin day may have changed. We asked all the North East councils when their refuse collections will take place this year. These are outlined below. There are details about normal collection days and the new ones to take note of.

Newcastle

The following information has been provided by Newcastle City Council:

(Normal collection date, followed by new collection date)

  • Christmas Eve, Tuesday, 24th December – No change
  • Christmas Day, Wednesday, 25th December – Friday, 27th December
  • Boxing Day, Thursday, 26th December – Saturday, 28th December
  • Friday, 27th December – Sunday, 29th December
  • New Years Eve, Tuesday, 31st December – No Change
  • New Years Day, Wednesday, 1st January, 2025 – Thursday, 2nd January, 2025
  • Thursday, 2nd January, 2025 – Friday, 3rd January, 2025
  • Friday, 3rd January, 2025 – Saturday, 4th January, 2025

Holiday periods mean more recycling. At Christmas, you may have extra cardboard, packaging, flower arrangements, and Christmas trees. New Year celebrations often bring additional glass and cans.

Here’s what can go in your blue bin:

  • Glass bottles and jars
  • Plastic bottles
  • Foil
  • Clean food and drink cans
  • Empty aerosols
  • Clean food trays, pots, and drink cartons
  • Glitter-free Christmas cards

What can’t go in your blue bin: Most gift wrap (due to glitter foil, or tape). Use the scrunch test: if it stays scrunched, it can go in the blue bin; if it bounces back, use the green bin.

Tips to save space in your blue bin:

  • Flatten cardboard and plastic bottles.
  • Use Household Waste & Recycling Centres (open daily except Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and New Year’s Day, closing at 4 p.m. on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve).
  • Request a bulky waste collection for large items (charges apply) or donate to charities.
