Cordae is shedding more light on YBN’s breakup.
The Maryland-raised artist revisited the topic during a recent interview with YouTuber Peaks100, who bluntly asked why Cordae decided to leave the hip-hop collective just three years after joining.
“It was a number of reasons, bro,” Cordae said around the 3:20-minute mark. “Name one group that stayed together. Not even the Jackson 5, and them n***as were brothers.”
Cordae reminded listeners that he and the YBN founders, Nahmir and Almighty Jay, never recorded a song together, suggesting there was a creative disconnect among the group. He also touched on a specific business disagreement that resulted in a massive blowup.
“The business side of it was kind of like, super f*cked up, honestly,” Cordae continued. “N****s got into a big argument in Europe. People say certain things they can’t take back. It’s still love, but it’s just some shit that you can’t take.”
But despite the collective’s disbandment, Cordae made it very clear he still has love for the YBN crew.
“Nahmir, that’s still my homie,” he said. “Jay, I still fuck with bro. Nahmir threw n****s that [alley] oop so I’m very grateful.”
Cordae made similar comments in September 2020, after fans noticed he removed “YBN” from his moniker.
“Namir and Jay, those always gonna be my brothers, in real life,” he explained during an appearance on Elliott Wilson’s Check-In series. “Like, I think the world of them cats. Sometimes as friends, you grow apart and you have different visions for what you wanna do and that’s OK, there’s no love lost. Like I said, I think the world of them n***as. I love my n***a Jay to death and yeah, that’s just that really.”
About a year after YBN broke up, Almighty Jay took aim at the group’s ex-manager/attorney, James McMillan. The rapper accused McMillan of shady and exploitative business practices.
“This n***a James McMillan is a fraud. He sign n***as to janky deals and f*ck em over. Nobody knows NOTHING about the sh*t we go through on the daily basis being signed to this n***a cause we cover for this n***a’s ass. I’m done with this sh*t.”
According to XXL, Cordae and Nahmir each “liked” the post.
“Trademarking the YBN name behind n***as’ backs, assigned me a lawyer he used to be engaged to without telling me SMH,” Jay continued on his Instagram Story. “Took advantage of some kids bro. If y’all really wanna know why YBN broke up…”
The accusations were in line with Nahmir’s previous comments on the No Jumper podcast, where he was asked what led to YBN’s fall.
“The old n***as in the background, you gotta remember, it’s always somebody that’ll come around and fill your head up and fuck it over,” he said without mentioning a name. “That’s what happened. It’ll be old people or somebody else that’l’ tell you you better than them, they don’t give a fuck about you, all that shit. And taht filled up all our heads. Not just me, not just Jay, not Cordae, but other YBN members, too.”
