Cordae Says Fatherhood Makes Him Feel ‘More Productive’

Fatherhood keeps Cordae locked in on his priorities.

The rapper, who released his third album, The Crossroads, last month, was a guest on The Breakfast Club on Wednesday, just a little over a year after welcoming his daughter, Shai, with Naomi Osaka. Around the 6:30-minute mark of the video below, he spoke about how parenting has changed his “time management.”

“For me, it’s more having a respect for my time, being more disciplined when it comes to my time, and also having more respect for other people’s time,” he said.

The Raleigh native added that whenever he leaves the house, it needs to be for “something important” or “fulfilling” that aligns with him being a father 24/7.

“It just really has me focused on time management versus before. … As an artist, you’ll be in the studio from like 9:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. one day, then the next day it might be from 7:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., so you’re kind of all over the place.”

With raising Shai, Cordae explained that his schedule has become more intentional than holding overnight studio sessions. “Since I had a daughter it’s like, now I’m in the studio from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. 6 days a week, and then three out of those six days I come back to the studio from like, 10 p.m. to 4:00 a.m.,” he explained. “So it’s more of like a regimen of me like recording and stuff. I’m more productive now because I don’t take my time for granted.”

But rather than it feeling like “work,” Cordae referenced “successful” artists like Pharrell Williams and Eminem, who have daytime studio schedules. “Where motivation is low, that’s where discipline kicks in or [when] inspiration is low, that’s where discipline comes in,” he said.

Last December, Osaka shared with InStyle that she and Cordae have developed a solid relationship as coparents.

“We built a really good foundation,” she told the publication. “I don’t know if it’s because he’s just an easygoing guy, but I think we just respect each other’s opinions. And if we disagree on something, we talk it out. At the end of the day, we both want what’s best for Shai.”
