County Durham firefighters called after woman finds ‘snake’ in her bathroom

North East firefighters responded to a fitting call out to kick off Chinese New Year of the snake.

At 8.38am on Wednesday, the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a snake in the bathroom of a home in the Durham area.

The snake did not belong to the frightened resident who phoned the Control Room for help.

However, after arriving at the property, the Station Manager found that the ‘snake’ was in fact a plaited lock of hair belonging to the caller’s daughter.

Instead of confirming the location of the ‘snake’ to pass onto the RSPCA, the Station Manager had to reassure the resident and gave her some water to calm her nerves.

While this incident turned out to be a false alarm, County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service would always encourage residents to phone for help if they need it. The team is trained in a host of animal rescue techniques.
