County Durham road partially closed after Storm Éowyn damaged leisure centre solar panels

A road in a County Durham town remains partially closed after Storm Eowyn caused damage to a leisure centre.

Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre was closed while council bosses assessed damage caused by the storm. The main doors remain closed while damage to solar panels is fixed.

A short section of Greenwell Road has also been closed to vehicles and pedestrians for public safety.

Alison Clark, Durham County Council’s head of culture, sport and tourism, said: “We are pleased to confirm Newton Aycliffe Leisure Centre reopened on Tuesday 28 January following a short closure while we assessed damage caused by Storm Eowyn.

“People visiting our centre should for the time being use our Greenwell Road entrance as we have had to close the main doors in the interests of public safety while storm damage to solar panels is addressed.

“A short section of Greenwell Road is closed to vehicles and pedestrians, again in the interests of public safety, but our car park is open.

“We apologise for any inconvenience while we carry out the essential work to address the storm damage and we will have everything open again as quickly as we can.”

Storm Eowyn caused widespread disruption when it hit the North East on Friday as winds up to 96mph battered the region.
