Alexander Isak finally has a Premier League hat-trick. Newcastle United’s first since Ayoze Perez!
The Swede found the net three times as the Magpies downed Ipswich Town, with Jacob Murphy helping himself to a goal and an assist in the rout. Isak was taken off in the closing stages, replaced by Miguel Almiron, and earned applause from both the buoyant away end and some Ipswich fans situated in the home stands.
Isak scooped the match ball at full-time and took in the warm congratulations from his co-stars. The TV cameras followed him around the Portman Road pitch as he made his way towards Newcastle‘s away following.
Isak turned his head away from the view of the lens and could be overheard saying: “I should have had four!” One Newcastle team-mate, out of the shot, could be heard replying: “You should have had five or six!”
Whoever the unidentified Toon star was, they were right. Despite a Man of the Match display and some fine finishes, Isak did miss a handful of chances that on another day he would have buried.
One particular one v one springs to mind, with Murphy’s fine through ball finding the £63m man before he sent a meek finish towards Muric with the goal gaping. Few will remember the other attempts other than the trio of finishes that propelled Newcastle back into European contention – and the man himself simply laughed off the jibe heard after the final whistle.
That’s now 10 goals in his last 11 appearances for Newcastle’s main man as he continues to flourish under Eddie Howe. “There’s no doubting his quality,” the Newcastle boss said at full-time.
“We just needed to get the framework of the team right to give him the opportunity to score. He has really responded well. The goals today just show his class and coolness in front of goal. With his speed and his technical ability, he has a bit of everything.”
