Crystal Palace 2-0 Newcastle player ratings: Murphy and Barnes struggle as Isak at least shows fight

Newcastle United were easily beaten at Selhurst Park as Crystal Palace created 20 goal attempts and could have easily won by a more handsome scoreline.

The opening quarter of this midweek showdown in the capital saw Newcastle having to defend as Palace asked all the early questions at Selhurst Park. Newcastle’s best chance came just before the half hour mark when Bruno Guimaraes hoisted a fine ball into the path of Alexander Isak but he was denied by Dean Henderson who rushed out.

Palace may not have converted in the first half but they found their touch in the second as Jean-Philippe Mateta helped himself to two goals. Newcastle at least managed a couple of shots on target but Palace could have had a few more.

Here’s how the players rated overall:

Martin Dubravka 7

Left totally exposed and was furious with his defence as they crumbled to their knees.

Jacob Murphy 4

A tough night and Howe was quick to make a second half change with Murphy sprinting off before the mid-way point of the second half. Struggled to cope with the duel roles and did not manage a cross.

Emil Krafth 4

Unable to cope with Palace’s lively attack. A gift of clearance to help hand Palace the lead.

Fabian Schar 6

Started off in relative control with a couple of good blocks. Slipping and sliding after the break. And lost his cool with Andersen.

Dan Burn 6

An assured showing in the first half but struggled badly after the break.

Elliot Anderson 7

One of the better performers on the night. Looked far from happy with his team-mates as Palace picked holes.

Sean Longstaff 6

Had a penalty shout after going over in the box. Started OK but fizzled out before being taken off.

Bruno Guimaraes 6

A couple of decent passes in the first half. When Newcastle needed something after the break he couldn’t deliver.

Anthony Gordon 6

At least offered a threat.

Harvey Barnes 4

His night did not get off to a good start after failing to make the most of an opening. And it went downhill from there.

Alexander Isak 7

Looked more lively after the break.

Subs

Callum Wilson 5 (for Barnes 65)

No impact. Just seven touches in all.

Lewis Hall 6 (for Murphy 65)

Caused a few problems.

Matt Ritchie (for Anderson 90)

Joe White (for Longstaff 90)

Here’s how the players rated in the first half:

Martin Dubravka 7

Has watched a couple of ambitious long range efforts drift to safety. Has dealt well with a couple of shots on target.

Jacob Murphy 6

Not adapting as well as Anderson to the duel role.

Emil Krafth 7

Getting stuck in and also trying to be the outlet when Newcastle break.

Fabian Schar 7

A couple of key blocks and has controlled things in the defensive zone.

Dan Burn 7

Assured stuff so far from the skipper.

Elliot Anderson 8

A commanding display as he drifts from being an attacking midfielder to a wing-back.

Sean Longstaff 7

One through ball for Harvey Barnes split the home defence when the £38million man should have done better. A dogged midfield showing so far.

Bruno Guimaraes 8

Relatively slick stuff from the Brazil star. A sumptuous ball into the path of Alexander Isak.

Anthony Gordon 6

Working hard to find some gaps in the Palace defence.

Harvey Barnes 6

Has not delivered in the first half. Wasted one good early chance.

Alexander Isak 6

One big opening wasted. No shots at goal yet.
