Regulars at a chic bar in the heart of Newcastle have been reacting with sadness to the shock news that it will be shut down before the end of March, after news of its closure was broken on social media earlier this week.
Moving into the building that once had celebs flocking when it was the plush Living Room bar and restaurant in the 00s, before then becoming themed bars Miracle on Grey Street and Alice in Wonderland inspired Those Who Know, Leila Lily’s first opened its doors in 2019, to a lot of attention, with its stylish and decadent decor seeing it emerge as an immediate favourite with its Instagram savvy revelelers.
As well as hosting fashion events and makeup masterclasses over the last six years, Leila Lily’s, thanks to being home to the stunning Eva Rose Garden, has also provided a backdrop for many people’s milestone celebrations, whether that be a birthday, engagement or baby shower.
Given just how popular it has been with a real mix of people, there was both shock and surprise, when a post appeared on the Newcastle city centre bar’s social channels early on Monday afternoon to announce that the tough decision had been taken to shut down, with closing date officially confirmed as being Sunday, March 23.
As well as revealing just when it will close and thanking customers for their support, the statement also gave assurances to anyone with existing bookings, adding: “For anyone with existing bookings or gift vouchers after our cls9ing date, we will be reaching out in the coming days to ensure everything is taken care of.”
Over the last few days, hundreds and hundreds of people have been leaving comments on Leila Lily’s social media pages to express their disappointment at it closing down, with 144 comments on the initial Facebook post alone. One upset regular reacted: “Ahh so sad to read this , had some lovely times at Leila Lily’s ,gorgeous afternoon teas and amazing cocktails in your beautiful bar & restaurant .Wishing all your staff the best for the future”
Equally sad at the news, a second replied: “So sorry to hear this . Have been many times from the moment you opened and never been disappointed. Good luck to you and your wonderful staff for whatever the future holds.”
At a time when it feels like many businesses are still struggling, Leila Lily’s broke its sad news just weeks after it was revealed that Thali Tray restaurant would be shutting its doors. And, addressing the trend of places closing, a third person wrote: “Since end of January this is now the 5th post of a business announcing their closure, 3 of those were small local businesses. This should not be happening, people should be supported not left to struggle. I am so sorry to hear this news and I wish you all the best for the future”
