
A man has been charged after a teenager was seriously injured in a collision involving a quadbike in County Durham.
Emergency services were called to a two-vehicle collision on Redworth Road in Shildon just before 1pm yesterday, in which a quadbike was found to have collided with a lamppost.
A 16-year-old boy, who is believed to have been on the quadbike at the time, suffered serious injuries to his head and leg and was taken to James Cook University Hospital.
Today, Durham Constabulary confirmed that two men, aged 20 and 26, were arrested in connection with the incident. The 26-year-old was charged with dangerous driving and assault causing grievous bodily harm has been remanded into custody.
The 20-year-old received no further action. A Durham Constabulary spokesperson said: “We received a report of a road traffic collision involving a car and a quadbike in Redworth Road just before 1pm yesterday (March 5). The quadbike collided with a lamppost during the incident.
“A 16-year-old boy, who is believed to have been on the quad at the time, suffered serious injuries to his head and leg and was taken to James Cook University Hospital where he remains. Two men, aged 26 and 20 were arrested in connection with the incident and interviewed.
“The 20-year-old received no further action while the 26-year-old was charged with dangerous driving and assault causing grievous bodily harm and remanded into custody. Declan Fahey, of Spennymoor will appear at Peterlee magistrates court tomorrow morning.
“Enquiries remain ongoing and anyone with information in relation to the incident is asked to contact South Durham CID on 101 quoting incident number 172 of March 5.”
The incident prompted a large emergency response, with one ambulance crew, one rapid response paramedic and the Great North Air Ambulance Service attending alongside police.
A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: “We received a call to a road traffic incident on Redworth Road in County Durham on Wednesday 5 March at 12:55. We dispatched one ambulance crew, one rapid response paramedic and were supported by our colleagues at Great North Air Ambulance Service. One patient was taken to James Cook hospital by road.”
