With summer just around the corner and hopes of a sun-soaked fling back on the cards, pop sensation Dannii Minogue is back to play Cupid for ten lucky singles as she hosts the UK’s first lesbian dating show, I Kissed a Girl.
Serving up plenty of drama, the show, which is shot in a stunning Italian Masseria, sees ten single girls paired up and meet for the first time with a nerve wracking kiss, in a similar format to the already successful male version of the show, I Kissed a Boy, which made history as the UK’s first gay dating show back in 2023.
Reflecting on the new series Dannii says: “We are so excited to be back and to share the stories of these girls. They are open and honest in their search for love, funny and surprising, so get ready for a whole rollercoaster of emotions. I genuinely laughed and cried watching all the antics in the Masseria.”
Although the show does follow the same format of I Kissed a Boy , Dannii explains how it comes with a number of key differences, several of which she feels will entertain audiences while also teaching them a thing or two.
“Although this is the same format, it feels brand new,” says Dannii. “The girls bring such a different energy and I feel stories of girls-who-like-girls have been sadly missing from so much of what we see on TV. “
“While the girls open up to possible love, I think so many viewers will be both educated and entertained. As each day developed, it sparked a lot of heartfelt conversation on and off the set.
“With lots of queer females on the crew, it created an incredible environment that supported the cast and was a joy to be a part of.”
Dannii herself openly admits to having been educated by the show, particularly when it came to expanding her vocabulary – something the singer was delighted to master.
Opening up about how much she had learned, Dannii says: ”I was on a learning curve with the boys, but with the girls, I actually needed a glossary of lesbian lingo to decode some of the conversations!”
“In the best possible way, their language cuts to the chase – and I was happily catching up. You will know what I mean when you hear fun descriptions like ‘golden retriever’ and ‘black cat’.”
Teasing what fans can expect from the series, Dannii reveals a welcome insight into her own unique role as Cupid, as she says: “ In my role as ‘cupid’ I always hope that an attraction sparks with such intensity that it leads to a lasting relationship – but my lips are sealed as to whether that happens this series.
“One thing I can tell you is that it was the ultimate lesbian summer holiday that the girls loved so much – I got the feeling they didn’t want it to end.”
Although Dannii remains tight-lipped about whether any lasting romances have formed, the Australian hitmaker did let slip: “The girls are so much fun. They wore their hearts on their sleeve and they did not hold back – with their affections as well as their opinions.
“They are so diverse in their personalities and in what they are looking for in a partner. Just remember the old saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover”, as each episode reveals more and more about their vulnerability underneath the exterior.”
During the show, the girls will begin to forge connections and bonds with each other, with romance blossoming in more than a few places, but in order to test their compatibility, several tests will be undertaken to see how well suited they really are.
The first of these tests, which was orchestrated by the crew with some help from Dannii herself, is called Red Flags, and even came with an added bonus of helping the group get to know each other better during the early stages of the Summer.
“Red Flags leans into a saying that comes up in conversation regularly with the girls,” explains Danni. “We wanted to use this to find out what would turn each girl off or give her the ‘ick’.”
However, despite good intentions it did leave chaos in its wake, as Dannii hints at explosive scenes ahead as she reveals “This challenge absolutely turned the Masseria upside down and there were long moments of navigating a level of awkward I had never experienced before.”
Describing each episode that unfolds as “electric”, the show even drew comparisons to an iconic board game from the songstress as she adds: “The last minutes of every episode leave me wanting to know what happens next. It’s like trying to predict what will happen in a game of Snakes and Ladders! Impossible!”
I Kissed a Girl starts Sunday May 5 at 9pm on BBC Three and BBC iPlayer
