Danny John-Jules, the star of BBC’s Death in Paradise, has confessed to ruffling feathers with his unexpected behaviour on set. The actor, known for his role as Officer Dwayne Myers, returned to the beloved BBC drama for its Christmas Special that aired on Sunday (December 22).
In anticipation of his comeback, Danny spilled the beans on what used to irk his fellow cast members when he first joined the show seven years ago. He shared: “It’s pretty much like walking out your front door for me. I first went there fourteen years ago, and I filmed seven series. After seven years, it was pretty much like being at home.”
Danny continued: “I used to annoy everyone because I could speak the local language. The mayor went crazy because when she first spoke to me, I was speaking in English. So she couldn’t understand how I was born in England but could speak Creole. She nearly fell over!”.
Danny added that he was also thrilled to have the actor playing Dwayne’s dad, Nelson, back on set. “I first worked with Ram John Holder in 1985 in a musical at the Donmar Warehouse. He’d always been a big inspiration of mine. He’s an actor, singer… He’s just one of those guys. And he’s 90?! It’s like getting to work with Laurence Olivier.”
Meanwhile, Don Gilet has opened up about the allure of the leading role he had long desired. At 57, he’s made his grand entrance as Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson in the special Christmas feature-length episode, taking over after Ralf Little’s departure from the series, reports Birmingham Live.
Don revealed that he was captivated by how the show expertly blended the darker elements of a crime series with the offbeat tone of the protagonist’s narrative. Don confessed he was ‘drawn in’ by the ‘seriousness’ and ‘quirkiness’ of the show.
Don took over the lead role from Ralf, and before him, Ardal O’Hanlon, Kris Marshall and Ben Miller – who have all played the main character at some point between now and 2011 when the show began. Don made his debut on the series on Sunday (22 December) for the Christmas special.
Talking about his character while appearing on The One Show, Don stated that Mervin was not ‘really liked’ to start with. And that like most of his predecessors, ‘doesn’t like’ Saint-Marie and is determined to leave the Caribbean island as soon as possible.
