TV legend Don Gilet is set to spice things up in the Death in Paradise cast, with the seasoned actor, known for his role as the menacing Lucas Johnson in EastEnders, stepping onto the sandy shores for the show’s Christmas special. At 57, Don’s career is a rich tapestry of roles, from Holby City’s halls to the eerie setting of The Loch, and even a venture into time and space with Doctor Who.
He’s no stranger to the Caribbean mystery series either, having appeared in a guest slot back in 2015. As he prepares to take on the role of Detective Inspector Mervin Wilson, Don couldn’t hide his enthusiasm, sharing with the Mirror: “This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated.”

Born in 1967 and hailing from Walsall, West Midlands, Don was bitten by the acting bug early on and honed his skills at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts.
His screen debut unfolded in 1993 with the comedy Desmond’s, leading to an array of parts including Now What, The Return of Nick Cotton, and Casualty. The turn of the millennium marked a pivotal moment when Don landed a spot in Babyfather, where he first met Diane Parish — a meeting that kindled a long-standing friendship.
Their paths realigned professionally in 2008 with Don’s intense portrayal of Lucas Johnson, bringing complexity to the streets of Walford.

The Death in Paradise star, who prefers to keep his personal life away from the limelight, was once married to actress Tracy Whitwell of Soldier, Soldier and Peep Show fame. The former couple, who lived together in Bedfordshire, share a teenage son named Flynn.
In a heartfelt chat with The Sunday Post in 2014, Don gushed about his then eight year old son: “Flynn’s eight and he’s pretty rambunctious. I think he’s got some of my playful genes… I have fun at work but when I get home I have to become a father and keep an eye on him not getting too wild. He’s a lovely kid but he’s very active and loves to run about the place. If you wind him up to play you have to allow the time to calm him before he beds down at night.”
Meanwhile, fans are buzzing with speculation over Don’s current love interest, as he’s been linked to Happy Valley star Siobhan Finneran. Although they’ve kept mum about their relationship status, the duo sparked rumours after being seen hand-in-hand at the TV Choice Awards 2024.
