Emmerdale star set to retire after brutal axe from the soap

Emmerdale star Dean Andrews previously opened up about retiring from the ITV soap amid his tragic storyline. The actor, who has played the role of Will Taylor since 2019, was wrapped up in a major storyline over Christmas, which saw him die from a heart attack.

It all unfolded on Emmerdale after Joe Tate, played by Ned Porteous, made a sensational return to the beloved ITV soap after six years away and was revealed as the mastermind behind Pete and Will Taylor’s schemes against Kim Tate. However, the drama took a shocking turn on Christmas Day when it all got a bit much for Will, and he suffered a heart attack following a row with his wife, Kim.

Kim was left stunned by the scheme and, in turn, waited too long to save her husband and ultimately watched him pass away. Joe covered for Kim and claimed that she had called immediately for help, which left her in his debt in another harrowing twist.

The unexpected plot twist shocked viewers, and Will’s final scenes were aired on Boxing Day, with it still unclear if he has been axed from the show or if it’s a temporary hiatus. Dean, who played Will, previously opened up about his role on Emmerdale and admitted he would need to be axed in a bid to ever leave the soap unless he retired.

Dean told The Sun earlier this year that he felt “very settled” in his role on Emmerdale and said it’s “really like” a family. He shared: “I definitely see Claire more than I see my own wife, and Olivia more than I see my own daughters so we are like a little family.”

He also said: “I do feel settled here. When the producers initially asked me to come in and asked me how long I’d like to stay and I said: ‘If I come in now, you’ll have to kick me out.’ I’ll stay as long as they want me to stay but how long they want to stay is up to them.

“I’m of an age now where I’m in my sixties so I’ll probably retire after this job.”

Although it was confirmed that Will died from a heart attack, viewers found Joe’s calm demeanour during the incident suspicious. His insistence that Kim conceals the true events of the day has left fans wondering what he’s hiding.

Following Will’s shocking heart attack and clips of Joe rummaging for pill packets, fans have been airing their theories on X, formerly Twitter. One viewer tweeted: “We’re wondering whether the postmortem will show up tablets in Will’s system that match Joe’s heart drugs?”

Another speculated: “Could Billy be onto something about Joe? Could Joe be linked to Will’s death? Or did he just die of a heart attack naturally?” Meanwhile, a third posted concerns over Joe’s intentions and said: “The way Joe is manipulating Kim – I have a feeling he did something to Will that triggered his heart attack.”

Another who suspects foul play added: “Think Joe drugged Will’s drink to bring the heart attack on; definitely suss he couldn’t care less about whether he lived or died!”
