A new immersive exhibit which invites visitors to step inside a giant drinks can has opened in Newcastle ahead of the February half-term holidays.
Infinity Room is a new installation at Life Science Centre which aims to raise awareness about recycling – in a unique way. The striking exhibit is designed to look like a drinks can and is made up of 1,500 of them.
The recycled aluminium cans are surrounded by 25 square metres of mirrors, which give the illusion of being surrounded by an infinite number of suspended cans for those who are inside. The Infinity Room is included in the entry price to Life in Times Square which also has a full programme of attractions on offer during half-term as well as a big birthday coming up in May when it will be celebrating its 25-year anniversary.
The new exhibit offers an intriguing way to learn about recycling, which is the aim of its creator, the not-for-profit organisation Every Can Counts, whose research shows that people in Newcastle consume on average four canned drinks a week, with only half of them saying they seek out recycling bins when out and about and a quarter bothering to take their cans home instead to recycle there.

Aluminium however is said to have ‘infinite recyclability’ potential, with obvious environmental benefits. Chris Latham-Warde, programme manager at Every Can Counts, said: “Every empty can could be recycled and back on a shop shelf as a brand-new can in just 60 days and each of us can play a vital role in keeping the cycle going to benefit the environment.
“With the exhibit on display until October, we hope that visitors to Life Science Centre are left feeling inspired to make small changes to their recycling habits and will encourage their friends and family to do the same.”
Life is also offering plenty other reasons to visit. This is National Astronomy Week, running until Sunday, and to tie in with it the centre is inviting visitors to see its show Just Look Up, which is running in its 360-degree planetarium dome and offers a tour of the night skies and a close-up look at galaxies.
Other popular attractions are its Wow Zone; under-sevens Play Zone; the Space Zone, which includes a replica of the International Space Station, plus opportunities to explore through experiments. It upcoming half-term additions will also include a Medical Mavericks show, running February 22-28, which will offer a chance to look through skin and inside an eye.
