Award-winning restaurant Mowgli Street Food will soon open its doors in Newcastle, with the promise of ‘fairylights and fresh Indian food’ as well as seven days of giveaways.
As previously reported TV chef and This Morning regular Nisha Katona’s booming business, known for its authentic Indian cuisine, recently revealed its opening date in the city will be March 14 and now it has followed up with news that it will be offering its popular ‘chaat bombs’ snack for free throughout its opening week. Local fans of Mowgli, which has branches in the likes of Cardiff, Birmingham and Edinburgh, have been eagerly awaiting its arrival in Newcastle.
And Nisha too says she is thrilled that the new branch, which has transformed the former home of Cafe Royal in Nelson Street, is finally about to open its doors. The restaurateur, cook book writer and presenter, who is also well known for appearances on This Morning and Cooking with the Stars, said: “I can’t wait to take Mowgli to the iconic food scene in the North East.
“I’m thrilled to have found our home in a city that I have been desperate to get to for years!” Her Newcastle restaurant will be recreating the look, atmosphere and food of her Indian home kitchen concept, which captures the way Indians eat in the privacy of their own homes, and at their favourite street stalls, and which has won fans across the UK.
And its giveaway here of chaat bombs – a street food snack that packs a variety of flavours into, and on top of, puri – is set to win over newcomers too. Nisha called the Mowgli take on the snack ‘iconic’ and soon city customers will be able to try it for themselves, alongside a varied menu.
“We hope diners will love Mowgli’s passion for healthy, fresh Indian food,” added Nisha. Diners can expect a trademark Mowgli look in the restaurant, featuring fairylights and trees hung with twines – all inspired by Nisha’s grandmother’s temple-side home in Varanasi, northern India.

Her restaurants are dog-friendly too and Nisha said of them: “It’s a place to kick back with friends and family, two and four-legged, as we have a passion for the things that matter to you.” Her business is also about helping local communities; raising money for charity and sponsoring children in need.
She added: “To make Newcastle truly our home, we will adopt Children’s Cancer North as our local house charity recommended by those who dine with us, to whom we will dedicate our time and resources”. Abigail Hewison, of the charity, said it is delighted and grateful to have been singled out by The Mowgli Trust. For more about Mowgli Newcastle restaurant keep an eye out here.
