Jason Donovan has declared his ‘love’ for Newcastle United, after being seen at St James’ Park during a visit to the city this week.
Like his world famous ex Kylie Minogue, Aussie star Jason shot to fame on classic soap Neighbours, as the show crossed from Down Under to become a huge ratings success from the BBC, propelling both of them to massive stardom. Like Kylie, who he duetted with on Especially for You, Jason was snapped up to embark on a pop career, scoring huge hits with the likes of Too Many Broken Hearts, When You Come Back to Me and Sealed With A Kiss, before swapping the charts for the West End to play the lead in Joseph.
And it’s musicals that have brought Jason, now 56, back to Newcastle city centre this week, with him playing Frank-N-Furter, the role made famous by Tim Curry on the big screen, in The Rocky Horror Show. The touring production of the much loved show currently has audiences dancing in the aisles at the Theatre Royal and, before one performance earlier this week, Jason filmed himself having a stroll around Newcastle, with his walk taking him down Northumberland Street, past Grey’s Monument and then to St James’.
Jason filmed himself outside the stadium, before revealing that his love for the Magpies stems from the fact that his wife supports United. Jason, who has also competed on both Strictly and Dancing on Ice, was actually in the stands at SJP a few seasons ago to see NUFC beat Burnley at the end of 2021.
Jason also spoke about being a Newcastle fan during an interview on BBC Breakfast a few years later, with him discussing his tour dates and saying: “I am going to Newcastle, so I’ll sell out there for sure…Sunderland, I’m not going to Sunderland – thank god for that!”
As host Sally Nugent retorted: “No, I bet you’re not,” Jason then did a bit of backtracking, as he interrupted: “No, in a good way! I love Sunderland; the rivalry between the two is what I’m talking about.”
