For The Love Of Dogs fans name four ways to fix show after Alison Hammond hits back over backlash

Alison Hammond was hit with a blow when she recently made her presenting debut on For The Love of Dogs. Following the passing of former presenter Paul O’Grady in 2023, the This Morning host is now the new face of the show.

However, with the new six-part series – which kicked off on Tuesday, 16 April – the 49 year old’s new role divided TV viewers, and this seems to have reflected in the viewing figures.

The episode reached two million viewers at its peak moment. According to ITV ratings, viewing figures averaged double that amount when late star Paul was at the helm, as more than four million viewers tuned in per episode in 2021, according to Express.co.uk.

Now, fans have taken it upon themselves to suggest some ideas to ‘improve’ the show. The first proposal was to get Alison a co-presenter, just like she has on This Morning.

Alison regularly teams up with Dermot O’Leary on Fridays for the daytime programme, so one viewer suggested: “My opinion is they should alter the format a little with preferably a couple of new presenters who are definitely not like Paul as nobody can directly replace his style.”

Additionally, some have called For The Love of Dogs to be renamed. One fan said: “I really like Alison, but I’m not sure how I feel about this. I felt maybe the show could’ve been retired under the title of For the Love of Dogs and given a new name so it wasn’t Alison directly standing in Paul’s shoes. I do feel for Alison a bit as there was always going to be comparisons and criticisms.”

A third option in a bid to raise viewing figures was for someone else to take the lead, with some naming Ben Fogle for the job.

One fan wrote: “Ben Fogle, if he gets tired of all his travelling, would make a good host.”

A fourth idea presented by viewers was to change the format of the show. They believe that because Paul is “irreplaceable”, the show should have copied the style of The Dog House on Channel 4, which doesn’t have a presenter.

These fan suggestions come after recent episodes were met with mixed reviews on social media, as some questioned Alison’s new role as presenter while others cheered her on. One person wrote on X: “Alison Hammond appears to have no connection, passion or affinity with the dogs as Paul did. Why they chose her is a mystery.”

However, others were more supportive of the TV star. One person wrote: “Why is there such hate for her on here? Am I missing something?”

Alison was quick to dismiss the critics though and told The Sun: “I was actually surprised with how much I got for doing the show. I could understand in the sense that Paul was so loved and people were saying: ‘How can she do Love Of Dogs when she doesn’t have a dog? How does she love dogs when she doesn’t have a dog?'”

She continued: “It’s like saying: ‘How can you love children when you haven’t got kids? It’s such a flawed argument for me and all I would say is: ‘If you don’t want to watch it, don’t watch it.’ That’s what I would say to those trolls: ‘Don’t watch it then. If you don’t want to help Battersea, don’t watch it’.”
