Frank Ocean Taps David Jonsson to Star in His Directorial Debut

Frank Ocean has cast Rye Lane and Alien: Romulus breakout star David Jonsson in the lead role of his directorial debut.

As reported by Variety, Ocean’s untitled independent film started production in Mexico City this month, and Jonsson is leading the cast. Further details about the project, including the plot and who else is tapped to star, remain under wraps. It’s not clear if Ocean also wrote the movie, but it’s clear that he’s already working with some exciting talent.

Jonsson made his film debut in the 2023 British rom-com Rye Lane, for which he received universal acclaim. He followed up the movie last year with a scene-stealing role in Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus. More recently, he co-starred in the historical thriller Bonhoeffer. He is set to appear in the Stephen King adaptation The Long Walk, and Wasteman, for which he is also an executive producer.

Rumors have circulated that Frank Ocean was gearing up to direct his first movie as far back as 2022. As Discussing Film reported, a source claimed the singer-songwriter was in talks with distributors A24 and 2AM to get the project off the ground. At one point, Bones and All actress Taylor Russell was rumored to be involved, but it’s unclear if she’s still, or ever was, attached.

Ocean hasn’t released a major project since 2016’s Blonde, but he did release a number of non-album singles up until 2020. For what it’s worth, though, Pharrell suggested last year that Ocean was “cooking” up new music.
