At the 2025 Oscars, ‘Anora’ emerged triumphant, scooping up five prestigious accolades including Best Picture, while Emilia Perez faced a challenging evening. The star-studded event saw Sean Baker and his movie ‘Anora’ honoured with an impressive haul of trophies – not just the sought-after Best Picture but also landing Mikey Madison the Best Actress in a Leading Role gong.
Baker secured his own triumph as Best Director, while ‘Anora’ additionally clinched Best Original Screenplay and Best Film Editing.
Emilia Perez didn’t enjoy as much success, despite being a contender in a staggering 11 categories. It did however win Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for ‘El Mal’.
In other achievements, ‘The Brutalist’ bagged three awards, with Adrien Brody acclaimed as Best Actor in a Leading Role, and also achieving Best Cinematography and Best Original Score victories. ‘Wicked’ was celebrated for its Best Production Design and Best Costume Design, whereas ‘Dune: Part Two’ walked away with Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.
The gala included a poignant homage to the recently deceased Gene Hackman, and host Conan O’Brien delivered some no-holds-barred commentary regarding controversy magnet and ‘Emilia Perez’ star Karla Sofia Gascon. Alex Coco, accepting the Best Picture award on behalf of ‘Anora’, inspired independent filmmakers with his words: “We made this movie independently. If you’re trying to make independent films, please keep doing it. We need more. This is proof.”, reports the Mirror.
Samantha Quan, remarking on their budget constraints during production, shared: “We made this with very little money, but all of our hearts to all of the dreamers and the young filmmakers out there. Tell the stories you want to tell. Tell the stories that move you. I promise you you will never regret it.”

Following suit, Director Sean Baker expressed his gratitude, saying: “I want to thank the Academy for recognising a truly independent film. This film was made with the blood, sweat and tears of incredible indie artists and… long live independent film!” When Best Actress went to Mikey Madison, she confessed feeling bewildered by the honour.
Addressing the crowd at the Dolby Theater, she admitted: “Wow this is very surreal. Forgive me, I’m nervous so I’m going to read off a paper. Thank you so much to the Academy. I grew up in Los Angeles but Hollywood always felt so far away from me, so to be here, standing in this room today is really incredible … Thank you to my incredible family, my mom and my dad, and my sister and my little brother and my twin brother Miles, thank you for being my best friend, not that you have a choice…”
She continued her acknowledgements: “I also want to recognise the thoughtful, intelligent, beautiful and breath-taking work of my fellow nominees. I’m honoured to be recognised alongside all of you, this is a dream come true and I’m probably going to wake up tomorrow. Thank you so much to Sean [Baker, director], I adore you, this is all because of you, thank you.”
