Full list of road closures and roadworks across the North East this week

There are a number of road closures in place across the North East this week that drivers should be aware of.

Some roads are closed while others have lane closures. Temporary traffic measures or diversion routes may also be in place on roads in the region. Motorists are urged to make allowances for these closures and use alternative routes if necessary.

If you’re planning to travel through Newcastle, Gateshead, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside, Sunderland or County Durham, take a look at the list below to see whether your journey will be impacted.

Newcastle

Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A191 Benton Park Road at A189 Killingworth Road (South Gosforth roundabout). Until 27th May 2024.
Pilgrim Street Southbound closed due to long-term roadworks between Blackett Street and A167 (Swan House Roundabout). Until 17th March 2025.
Queen Victoria Road Southbound closed due to roadworks from B1318 Claremont Road to Richardson Road. Until 19th March 2025.
No through traffic allowed due to water main work on Ashleigh Grove in both directions from Brentwood Avenue to Highbury. Until 29th April.
No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Glenthorn Road in both directions from Lonsdale Terrace to St George’s Terrace. Until 29th April.
No through traffic allowed due to water main work on Woodlands in both directions from Moor Crescent to Moor Place. Until 23:00 on 29th April.

Gateshead

Narrow lanes and speed restriction of 50 mph due to major widening works on A1 Western Bypass Westbound from J65 (Birtley) to J67 (Coalhouse Roundabout). Expect delays. Work to create an extra lane in each direction. Until 31st May 2025.
One lane closed due to roadworks on A167 Tyne Bridge in both directions between Hawks Road and Swan House Roundabout. Until 4th April 2025.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Derwentwater Road at First Street. Until 10th May.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Mount Road at Fell Cross. Until 23:00 on 2nd May.

North Tyneside

Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A187 Maurice Road near Neptune Road. Until 14th May.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A187 Neptune Road near Benton Way. Until 14th May.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on Beach Road at Regents Drive. Until 31st May.
Bell St in both directions closed due to roadworks between Liddell Street and Union Quay. Until 21st June.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on Eastfield Avenue in both directions at George Road. Until 30th April.
Temporary traffic lights due to long-term roadworks on Liddell Street near Clive Street. Until 13th May.
Tyne Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Norfolk Street to Stephenson Street. Until 15th May.
No through traffic allowed due to roadworks on Bolingbroke Road in both directions from Langley Road to Surrey Road. Until 29th April.

South Tyneside

Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A183 Coast Road near Kingsway. Until 14th June.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A183 Mill Lane at Fern Avenue. Until 31st May.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B1301 Highfield Road near Cheviot Road. Until 13th May.
Temporary traffic lights due to electricity work on Commercial Road in both directions at Cone Street. Until 30th April.
Lincoln Road in both directions closed due to roadworks from Horsley Hill Square to Cheshire Grove. Until 17:00 on 3rd May.
No through traffic allowed on Bryers Street in both directions from A183 Mill Lane to Geoffrey Street. Until 16th May.

Northumberland

Bridge Street closed due to roadworks from B1329 to B1327 Union Street. Until 15th November.
Common Bank in both directions closed due to roadworks between the A686 and Thornley Gate. Until 15th May 2025.
Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Malvins Road at Kings Gardens. Until 23:00 on 7th May.
Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Wenlock Road in both directions at Binchester Street. Until 30th April.

Sunderland

Temporary traffic lights due to water main work on Blackfell Road in both directions at Knoulberry Road. Until 29th April.
Easington Street in both directions closed due to roadworks from Sheepfolds North to Richmond Street. Until 30th September 2025.
Traffic taking turns due to water main work on Queen Alexandra Road in both directions at St Nicholas Avenue. Until 1st May.
No through traffic allowed due to new road layout on Berwick Avenue from Birrell Street to Barrow Street / Berwick Avenue. Until 24th January 2026.
No through traffic allowed due to water main work on Galloping Green Road in both directions between Thomas Street and the Wagon Inn. Until 28th June.

County Durham

Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on A182 near Admiralty Way. Until 15th September.
Temporary traffic lights due to gas main work on A690 High Street North in both directions at Mill Road. Until 29th April.
Traffic taking turns and one lane closed due to roadworks on A693 Westbound at the Tanfield turn off. Expect delays. Until 17:00 on 28th April.
Temporary traffic lights due to roadworks on B6302 Broom Lane near Cookes Wood. Until 29th April.
Wallnook Lane in both directions closed due to roadworks between Front Terrace and Firs Terrace. Until 31st December.
