Last year its Chronicle of Narnia display was branded ‘better than Fenwick’s’ as both venues went for the same theme for Christmas and now a popular Gateshead pub has become an Instagram sensation once again, after a stunning transformation to turn it into the North Pole for the festive season.
While it has amassed a whole load of returning customers, thanks to its fantastic decor and generous portions, many people have still to try The Woodmans Arms in Fellside near Whickham, which although may seem a bit ‘off the beaten track’ is actually just 10 minutes drive from the Metrocentre and dead easy to get to..
After its Narnia Winter Wonderland proved a real hit with diners of all ages this time last year, the press was on for The Woodmans to deliver the goods for Christmas 2024 and they certainly have understood the assignment, with the premises, both inside and out, having a magical makeover, with staff taking inspiration from much loved Tom Hanks animation, The Polar Express.
The lights all the way around The Woodmans Arms make it stand out like a beacon from the road, even on the darkest of December nights and the second you walk through the doors, you are transported to Santa’s realm, with the front of a train coming out of on tunnel to welcome customers this year, before a walk into the main bar brings a table done out to make look like a train carriage and flanked by snow covered pine trees.
One of the star attractions of The Woodmans themed display this year is the huge Christmas tree in the cosy dining area, which has been decorated with an abundance of Polar Express themed ornaments, including a North Pole sign, conductor’s hat and little trains. This year’s theme even runs through to its festive menus, which come on train tickets adorned with the words The North Pole Express Round Trip’ on and their own sleigh bells; while golden tickets with the words Believe are also dotted around the place.
Given the effort that has gone into the display this year, it’s little surprise that anyone who has been to The Woodmans Arms over the last few weeks, has been quick to post about their visit, with a search on Instagram bringing up an array of posts about it; including one from local influencer Chloe Elizabeth, who posted: “A Christmas at @the_woodmans_arms. Felt like I was in santas grotto, followed by the most amazing Christmas menu.”
Another diner had one word for their experience and that was ‘magical’ as another described it as ‘the most festive pub in the North East’
