An augmented reality go-karting track allowing drivers to become part of a real-life video game has opened on Tyneside. BattleKart Gateshead uses ground-breaking computer-generated content to create immersive experiences while driving electric karts at speeds of up to 25mph on virtual courses.
Gamers can boost their speed by driving over ‘power ups’ and fire rockets at friends or create oil spills if they are going to be beaten to the finishing line for a coveted place on the winners’ podium. Franchisee Liam Caffrey said: “It is like traditional go-karts in that you are moving around but the track is all projected on the floor and walls so there is that immersive feeling of being in a video game.
“We use augmented reality technology so there is a different track each time you are racing and it is computer-generated so it is a different feeling from a traditional go-kart track. It is fully electric so there is no petrol or fumes. You are essentially in a real life video game and you are so low down to the ground you move with a real zip.”
BattleKart Gateshead was only the second in the country when it opened in late November. There are other sites in Kent and Hertfordshire but the site near the Metrocentre is the only one in the north of England. The established chain, which started in Belgium ten years ago, has sites across the globe, with 45 locations in Europe, North America, the Middle East and Australia.
There are several games to choose from and while BattleRace tests speed and strategy, BattleFoot is a football game played from the seat of the go-kart and BattleSnake means people can relive the nostalgia of the classic mobile phone Snake game. There is also BattleColour, BattlePool and BattleVirus with the choice to play in a team with friends or head-to-head.
There is no age restriction but riders must be 145cm or 4ft 9ins tall. Liam said the karts are fitted with anti-collision technology to minimise the risk of injury from a crash.
He said: “It does not negate any contact at all but it does minimise the risk and you will not have any full speed crash that you could do at a normal go-karting. “The karts do not go as fast as normal go-karts but while it is similar it is a completely different experience.”
The attraction, at Unit 4 Riverside Metro, on Delta Bank Road, is open seven days a week and features a bar, cafe, and viewing gallery.
