Gavin and Stacey star debuts dramatic transformation for new romance role

Rob Brydon looks worlds away from his Gavin and Stacey days in his latest acting role. The actor is arguably best known for his portrayal of Bryn in the hit BBC sitcom, written by James Corden and Ruth Jones.

Rob, 58, has swapped Barry Island for Tudor England in new series My Lady Jane, in which he portrays Lord Dudley. The upcoming romantic period drama is due to be released on Prime Video on 27 June, and is set in an alt-Tudor world.

History has almost been rewritten in the series, as King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, and Lady Jane Grey and her husband Guildford are not beheaded in a twist of events.

Elsewhere, Anna Chancellor portrays Lady Frances Grey, and Jim Broadbent plays the Duke of Leicester. Isabella Brownson and Robyn Betteridge will play Jane’s sisters. The cast also includes Henry Ashton, Kate O’Flynn, Abbie Hern, Máiréad Tyers, Joe Klocek, and Michael Workeye.

A synopsis for the show reads: “Gird your loins for the tragic tale of Lady Jane Grey, the young Tudor noblewoman who was Queen of England for nine days and then beheaded in 1553… F*ck that. We’re retelling history the way it should have happened: the damsel in distress saves herself. This is an epic tale of true love and high adventure set in an alt-universe of action, history, fantasy, comedy, romance, and rompy-pompy. Buckle up.”

Rob’s new role comes after rumours of a Gavin and Stacey reunion kickstarted again, following reports suggesting James and Ruth had been working on another Christmas special. The show was brought back for a one-off festive special in 2019.

Rob addressed the speculation in an interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today show. He admitted he would “love” to star in another reunion episode.

“I get asked about this every interview I ever do. As far as I’m aware – I sound like a politician! – it’s another rumour. I don’t know, I’d love it if it was true,” Rob said.
