Gogglebox’s George Gilbey’s last 3 words to his mum before tragic death

Gogglebox star George Gilbey’s mum, Linda McGarry, has shared the poignant last words her beloved son spoke to her before his untimely passing. The much-loved reality star, known for his appearances on Channel 4’s Gogglebox and Celebrity Big Brother, tragically lost his life at just 40 years old on March 27, 2024, due to an incident at work.

An emotional farewell was held last week at a crematorium close to his Clacton-on-Sea home in Essex, following the conclusion of his inquest. Linda, 74, who also gained fame alongside her son and husband Pete McGarry on Gogglebox, bravely recounted the final conversation she had with George just hours before the accident that led to his death.

Fighting back tears, she recalled their casual chat that morning, revealing: “He phoned me at 9.30 on the morning and said he was working – and asked me for his ‘breakfast money’. I put £30 in his account so he could get food, and he seemed fine.”

During the emotional chat with The Sun, Linda recalled his beloved last words to her: “He had a drink the night before, and liked a bottle of white wine or two, but was happy that he was working. He ended the phone call by saying, ‘I love you’ like he usually did. I treasure those words.”

The heartbroken mother expressed her immense pride in having George as her son, describing their time together as a “blast”. Fans of Gogglebox were left reeling from the news of the TV personality’s tragic passing last month, reports the Mirror.

A police statement confirmed the sad details: “We received a report of an incident at Campfield Road in Shoebury at around 10am this morning (27 March), during which a man who was working at height had fallen and sustained an injury. The ambulance service including air ambulance were in attendance. Sadly, the man died at the scene. We will continue liaising with partners including the Health and Safety Executive. A cordon remains in place at the scene.”

The inquest into his death, held this month in Chelmsford, concluded that George suffered fatal injuries after falling through a skylight while on a roofing job. The post-mortem examination indicated that the injuries were “consistent with a fall from height,” according to the Essex coroner’s court.

George is survived by his cherished seven year old daughter Amelie, whom he welcomed with his former partner Gemma Conway. His mum, Linda has also had to deal with the loss of her husband, Pete, who passed away last year from bowel cancer.

Despite doctors initially giving him six months to live, tragically, Pete passed just a few days following his diagnosis. “Pete was a lovely man and I was so lucky to have him for 25 years. I said to him, ‘We’ve not only been 25 years, it’s been day and night with each other.’ He was my life,” Linda shared in an interview.

Pete had lost six stone during lockdown and was then told he had cancer. After undergoing an operation to remove the tumour he was told he had half a year to live, but tragically died just a few days later.

Upon this sad news, there is also a personal hardship for Linda who earlier this year, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. She opened up about her condition in April: “I have been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and George took it worse than me. He was a mummy’s boy.”

In a recent heartfelt chat with The Sun, Linda acknowledged her son George’s help in managing her Parkinson’s disease. “He would fuss over me, change my bedding and do my shopping. He was always nagging me to remember to take my pills. George was very kind and had a heart of gold.”
