Heinz has sparked disappointment among shoppers after confirming that it has axed a popular long-running diet food range.
The iconic brand has discontinued its Weight Watchers frozen ready meals, it announced after some customers noticed that the products were no longer available in stores. One shopper enquired as to their whereabouts on social media, asking Heinz: “Can you advise whether frozen Weight Watchers meals are discontinued, particularly sweet and Sour Chicken and Chicken and Broccoli melt?”
The brand soon replied to confirm that these meals are no longer being produced. A spokesperson for Heinz UK told The Mirror: “We’ve taken the strategic decision to streamline our UK portfolio which includes discontinuing our frozen line with Weight Watchers.
“We know our fans will be disappointed to see it go, but this change will enable us to focus on the product lines that deliver the most value for our customers and pave the way for new innovation that meets changing consumer tastes, lifestyle needs and preferences,” they added.
It comes after Heinz also halted the production of popular Weight Watchers beans last year. Heinz previously owned the weight loss brand from 1978 before selling it in 1999, but kept the rights to use the Weight Watchers name on some food products.
The brand originally launched its WeightWatchers frozen ready meal range, consisting of eight options, in October 2017. The range joins other favourite Heinz products to have been axed in recent months, including – much to the dismay of shoppers – its Chicken & Sweetcorn Soup.
One shopper wrote at the time: “Does anyone know why they have stopped selling Heinz Chicken & Sweetcorn soup?” While a second added: “I’m a little upset that I’ve not been able to find Heinz Chicken & Sweetcorn soup recently.”
