The Amika Mirrorball High Shine + Protect Antioxidant shampoo is being withdrawn from beauty counters for not adhering to regulatory standards, affecting all batches produced in 2023 and 2024. This shampoo, notable for its pink patterned bottle, forms part of the Shine-O-Sphere collection, which also includes a hair mask, gloss spray, and conditioner.
Both TK Maxx and major online beauty outlets such as Cult Beauty and Sephora have recalled the set, having sold it from April to December 2024. The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS), overseeing the recall, has issued a warning: “The product poses a microbiological risk as it could have a change in odour and in rare cases cause temporary irritation due to the presence or potential presence of the bacterium P.Gergoviae.”
Meanwhile, Amika has confirmed that this recall does not extend to any other products in their range, as detailed by a report in the Express.
In their statement, the brand assured: “We have been monitoring recent feedback citing change in odour and in rare cases, temporary irritation.”
They further clarified, “There have been no reported serious adverse health events associated with using this product.”
The decision to initiate the recall came after the discovery that multiple production lots at a contracted manufacturer did not meet the high standards expected by the company, leading back to detections of P. Gergoviae bacterium.
“If you have the product in your possession, please stop using it immediately, even if the product does not appear to have a change in odour or quality issue.”
“We want to reassure you that, after consultation with an independent toxicology group, we are confident the use of this product does not pose a serious health or safety risk to healthy people.”
“However, individuals with certain risk factors such as a weakened immune system or broken skin may be more susceptible to infection.”
