It’s one of the oldest and much loved pubs in Newcastle and will no doubt be packed out with fans spilling out of the door ready to watch the Magpies play in the Carabao Cup final this weekend.
Only footsteps away from St James’ Park, the Strawberry has for decades been the spiritual home of Newcastle United fans for a matchday pint.
The city has already come alive with Geordie pride this week as black and white stripes, window art and murals have displayed well wishes for the team ahead of the big game against Liverpool on Sunday.
The Strawberry has even been graced with its own ‘Mul Draws’ mural of a Guinness Toucan and Magpie, just being finished off when we popped by on Thursday lunchtime. It will remain there till June.
Lewis Brown, assistant manager at the Strawberry, told ChronicleLive that operations for Sunday’s big game are going smoothly: “It’s chaos on match-day… but we know what we are doing. We wouldn’t have lasted as long as we have if we didn’t!”

Anyone who has been to the Strawberry on a matchday before will be aware of what Lewis brands ‘pandemonium’. He said: “Queues spill from the bar down to the pillars and upstairs, every table is full. It’ll be rammed but it’s not a issue, it’s all fun.”
And when it comes to the all important matchday pint, Lewis adds: “We have ordered in extra everything. Extra spirits, extra kegs of beer. We’re canny well stocked and will be having more deliveries too ahead of Sunday.”
“We’ll have 40 kegs of Guinness and expect to serve 3,000 pints of it!”

The pub is even selling limited edition ‘theberrypub’ Carabao Cup final cups, which Lewis jokes hopefully isn’t the only cup we will get. Other merch including beanies, bucket hats and of course scarves is available – but punters are warned to be quick as there’s not many left.
