Huge ITV star reveals their first role in a hit drama – and fans can’t believe it’s her

Viewers were shocked at a throwback picture of Susanna Reid during a segment of Good Morning Britain on Tuesday 15 May when she revealed her acting background. The presenter was interviewing Casualty star Derek Thompson when she opened up about her television beginnings as an actress. Susanna starred in Channel 4’s The Price in 1985 – making Susanna just 13 years old at the time.

Ed Balls was particularly intrigued and asked Derek: “Could she have been a star of the stage or the screen rather than television?” Derek looked momentarily confused before confirming: “We all thought you were going to be a star.”

As Susanna went on to explain more about her time on television, she dropped the bomb that Succession’s Dame Harriet Walter played her mum. Susanna asked Derek whether he enjoyed working with her as much as she liked working with him. She then added that doing the show meant she “never acted again”.

Derek recalled what it was like working with Susanna on set: “Well, you were obviously passionate. We were initially obviously very cautious around you because actors can be very badly behaved and foul-mouthed. You were 13 years old so it didn’t take long for us to recognise you were passionate about it but you were watching us and picking up some bad habits.”

As Susanna confirmed, she never acted again but did soon start out her career as a presenter in 2001 when she joined BBC Breakfast alongside Bill Turnbull. Derek on the other hand went on to play Charlie Fairhead in Casualty for 38 years before calling it quits in a very dramatic episode that aired in March.

In an interview with OK! Derek explained he hoped his final episode would shine a light on the increasing amount of violence against NHS staff. “I have utter respect for NHS staff,” he says. “This final story really does create a realism, which will poke people in the eye and say, ‘This really is painful for these people, and yet they struggle on.’”

Derek was the only original cast member left in the show – but admitted he didn’t think he’d stay for so long. “No, I never envisaged I’d stay 38 years,” he smiles. “I originally signed up for three years, but it soon became apparent what a great character he was to play. Medicine and television have both changed a lot since I started. But the basics are still there – the reception area and desk where people roll up is still performing the same function it did on my first day.”

Since leaving the continuing drama, Derek has gone on to appear in Blue Lights, a police drama set in Northern Ireland.
