A mouth-watering pick of 30 real ales starting at £1.69 a pint will be on sale during a spring festival which will be in full flow within days.
JD Wetherspoon has announced that a 12-day festival will be running at 11 pubs in and around Newcastle, offering customers a chance to taste some top brews from around the world. And coupled with low prices – the top cost of a pint will be just £2.15 – beer fans will be in for a treat.
None of the real ales at the festival will previously have been available at the pubs. Some are being brewed for the first time, exclusively for the festival, and included in the range of 30 beers will be five from international breweries.
Mike Graveson, manager of The Five Swans in Newcastle which is among the pubs taking part in the festival, called it “a great celebration of real ale”. It will run from March 5 to March 16 inclusive and he said: “It will allow us to showcase a selection of superb beers, featuring beers not previously available to our customers in the pub, including those from brewers as far afield as Australia and New Zealand, as well as those closer to home, over a 12-day period.”
Ales from other international breweries featured will come from Italy, Canada and the US – and all the overseas brewers are female. They will be offering beer-lovers a chance to try the likes of Hey Pal, from America’s Terrapin Brewery; Wallaby from Penny Red in Australia and Chocolate Porta from Italy’s Birra Perugia Brewery.

Others will be Estuary Session Ale created by Land & Sea Brewery in Canada and Antiopdean from Brew Moon Brewery in New Zealand. The local Wetherspoon pubs participating in the festival will include six in and around Newcastle which, besides The Five Swans in St Mary’s Place, will be The Quayside; The Keel Row in Newgate Street and The Mile Castle in Westgate Road plus The High Main in Shields Road, Byker, and The Job Bulman in St Nicholas Avenue, Gosforth.
Others are – in Gateshead – The Tilley Stone in Jackson Street and Wetherspoon at the Metrocentre, as well as The Ritz in High Street West, Wallsend; The Fire Station in York Road, Whitley Bay, and The Red Lion in Front West Street, Bedlington.
As well as being able to taste different malt and hop varieties from around the world, their customers will have a chance to try beers that include cherries and cocoa beans in their ingredients. Some of the beers will be vegan and all can be ordered at the bar or via the Wetherspoon app.
The festival line-up will also include the likes of Alpha Female, from Rooster’s Brewing Co; Loopy Loo from Batemans; Chase the Sun by Vale; Cherry Nice from Greene King and Queen of Hearts by St Austell plus Elgood’s Mocha Porter; Hook Norton’s Grand Union and Black Sheep’s Blossom. Mike added: “All of the beers will be available at great value-for-money prices.”
There will be three third-of-a-pint tasters available too, for the price of a pint. To whet the appetite, the pubs will have festival magazines containing details of the tasting notes. A digital version will be available on the app and Wetherspoon website.
